Hotel Plaça de la Font, Tarragona, Spain
Tarragona was chosen for no other reason than that of convenience. It was an 8½ hour drive from home which with stops, would be the maximum comfortable initial journey with two drivers alternating.
Setting off at 7am, we had an uneventful journey, arriving at our destination around 5pm. After checking in, we set off to explore and celebrate the beginning of our adventures. Truth be told, we were more intent on celebration that first night rather than exploration and the next day we set off slowly to complete our intentions of the previous night!
We wandered through the streets and found our way to the port via the Roman ampitheatre It came as a bit of a surprise to discover the city's rich historical past. However, a visit to a local archaeological museum located at the port perhaps had more to do with the need to sit and also use the loo rather than investigate further, the historical importance of the town. Nonetheless, it was a beautiful sunny day and reflections on the water at the port created a lovely environment in which to regain our equilibrium. We climbed steps up the narrow streets and found a place to sit and watch the world go by in a Plaza in front of an impressive church. Someone had made a painting a of a cat on a low wall and as we watched, a real cat came out from behind the wall and sat next to the painting. I was a moment too slow with my camera!
The town seemed really quiet during the day, however when Friday night arrived the atmosphere completely changed. The Plaza was full of people enjoying the start of the weekend and having a meal out. It was the first time we'd found ourselves confronted by so many people since the pandemic started and feeling somewhat uncomfortable, we called it a night.
