Back home on the mountain again and adjusted back to Spanish time without any problem. It was a glorious morning and sunrise as I set off for a walk with Nell. I found the need to climb rather than walking on flat surfaces a bit of a struggle at times; need to get back into walking rather than dawdling! As Nell and I walked on the top area of the mountain, I saw a movement out of the corner of my eye above me. Nell set off along the track and I called her back. Thank goodness I did too; a huge wild boar ran across the track in front of us a little further on. Whilst I was delighted to have seen this animal right on my doorstep (as it were!) I also had mixed feelings because this Sunday sees the start of the 3 month shooting season and the place will be heaving with shooters. I just hope the boar stays hidden.
I have started to unearth my earlier Tibetan photos and history which I want to start to put together in a blog incorporating this recent visit. Think I'll have my work cut out for me over the next few weeks.
Expended my energy repairing the tracks outside after recent heavy rains. A neighbour is also out and between us, we should get it back in good repair before too long.

A trip to the coast this morning to enable my brother to sort out a few things he needed to before his departure home to northern Spain on Tuesday. I had seen an advert for an organic market and as I was out in the direction I believed it was being held, had a scout around. Turned out I was a day early! Still, it did lead to an invitation to dine out for my troubles, so not complaining!
I gather the weather has been dreadful since our departure from New York. In fact there's even a hurricane alert in place; came home just in time I reckon!

October 3rd to 5th
Still trying to catch up with myself following my return from the States. There's also a road which needs repairing as well as catching up with some tv programmes. Excuses, excuses for not buckling down and taking some photos I know!
I did make the effort to go with a photographer friend to a gig by a local rock band to see what images may have been on offer. There was nothing that I could see and the environment wasn't really one which appealed. It was basically a beach bar full of British expats and although the band were good, in the daylight, no decent perspectives were available as far as I could see. Once outside a couple of oxen passed by. I was too late to get a front view though. A hang glider also did a turn along the water line against the setting sun.
I have today however, received my photo challenges for the next two weeks which should keep me a little bit more focused. I must find subjects to shoot at multiple angles, to really work it rather than a quick shoot and then moving onto the next subject. Some of the chosen subject must be an animated object as well. Should be insteresting!

An early morning start to head into Malaga and the train station. Last time I went I missed the turn I had used previously and carried on to the next turn which took me directly to the station. I used this route again and when I left, found another more direct route as well. Let's hope I am able to remember it whenever I have to go again!
It was a beautiful sunrise, the only trouble it was right in my eyes. Arriving home I determined that it would be a lazy day. I caught up on some tv and then settled down to deal with my latest set of challenges to complete the next level of my photography course.
I also had the urge to start going through some of my images from America. This little fawn jumped out at me to process; I obliged!

A very productive and enjoyable day! I managed to finish off increasing height of the roadside gutter as well as negotiate a dumper truck for Saturday which will help finish off the rest of repairs. Then it'll be on to tackle the weeds which seem to be growing by the hour; mind you, it's so nice to see green!
I spent several enjoyable hours processing some of my American trip photos. It was only a week ago that I came back and yet my trip seemed to have taken place much longer ago. It's great to have the photos to look back on and remind me of experiences.

Catching up with a friend at the coast I was delighted to see that it was possible to walk to the beach again; Nell of course, was in her element. I had the opportunity to mess around with my fish eye lens. I was chuffed to bits with what I was able to include.
It seemed to be a day for photos including dogs. I was on the beach amongst rock when a young Spanish girl and her dog appeared. She just seemed to be lost in her own world with her dog looking on. I took some photos and then when she seemed to be back in the real world, I approached and asked if she minded that I had taken photos of her. She was not only happy that I had already taken some photos, she then went back to the water in case I wanted to take more!
Sitting at a beach bar later, my friend and I were amused to see a lady arrive with two small dogs in a handlebar basket. I took some photos as they were extracted from their basket, however it was when they left that I was able to capture the better images.

Ready for some more rain now - at least overflowing water shouldn't mess up my front entrance now. Hopefully, being prepared will lessen future work for a while. Now those weeds need attention so that I can get the winter veg planted and growing. At least the hens listened to the words I spoke to them the other day and have now started to lay. Three eggs from three different hens today!
I had some fun creating a bubble brush to use in Photoshop editing. I took it further by learning how to create an underwater feel and included a photo of a friend taken earlier in the year. I will look to take other images of people with compositing in mind and for sure I need to have lots more practise on putting it all together. For a first try though, I see potential. The next module focuses on party bubbles, whatever they are. All will be revealed soon I hope.

9am he said. I thought I had half an hour for a coffee. Just as I sat down to drink it, so the unmistakable noise of the dumper truck reached me. I dropped everything and rushed outside and for the next few hours worked alongside a neighbour as we played second fiddle to the machine filling in ruts on the road. I felt that I'd done a day's work by the time I came back inside at coffee time and sat down. The road looks good though and for sure my car will benefit.
A bit of housework followed and then I settled down to have a look once again at my photoshop course. I created the soap bubbles and liked the look of them better than the water bubbles. The next unit was entitled Misty Seascape. I followed all the guidance and I learnt to use several features I hadn't explored before. What I was creating however, didn't appeal. It was basically a long exposure and milky water effect. I would much rather experience creation of such an image in camera rather than in an editing program although I undoubtedly learnt a great deal.
The Photography group to which I belong had a mass weekend hangout. The idea was for people on the course to drop in and out to chat. I looked in a couple of times; the first occasion was interesting with chats about lighting set ups. The second time I dropped in, there was a piece of paper on which was written "I may be back"! I guess people were running out of steam.
I had chats with some of my group members though; they all said they were glad I was back as it had been quiet whilst I'd been away! Managed to get my Level 17 Mindbender submissions ready although as the tutor is away for another week I shan't upload them for a while. Just my photos for the last critique to put together and then I will have completed this first stage of of the course.

A few more hours spent with my photoshop course resulted in an image of a horse with wings! I enjoyed using all the editing features in this module. I used one of the images from my time in the Carmargue earlier this year and it seemed to work well. It may be that I include this image as an example of before and after photo editing for my Level 17 Photography Course too. Quite a productive morning, especially as it was wet outside and I couldn't get out to do any work.
A quick trip to the coast and then inland to see if low cloud had penetrated the wooded area near to the river and waterfalls. They hadn't and in fact I was really surprised at just how little water was running; much less than in summer. There was a huge amount of mud which had been washed down and it's possible that there are blockages higher up or the river has more diversions now.
I also had a go at capturing different angles of my cat for my weekly challenge. It definitely is a challenge with an animal which rarely stands or sits still!

Rain was forecast for today, however looking at the radar map, it seemed as if there might be a window of opportunity to take some photographs. I wanted to investigate a particular building in Malaga. I'd driven passed it numerous times, yet never seen more of it than the glass walls facing the motorway. Taking advantage of a slight lifting of the cloud, I headed out with a photographer friend.
It was relatively easy to find the building and although it rained heavily en route, as we arrived, the rain eased and we were able to have a walk around. It's a huge building with intricate designs and features. I'm not very good at deciding how to photograph structures and wanted to use this challenge to try and learn more.

It was glorious out first thing. The clouds were little itty bitty ones which the rising sun was beginning to highlight. It was quite clear and the changing colours of approaching Autumn were beginning to show. On the way back home I was told about some walks that I hadn't been on; not too far away. May have a look before too long.
My builder friend dropped by and it was unfortunate that I had just mixed a barrow load of cement as we had so many things to tell each other. Eventually I went back to work and managed to complete the cementing of my roadside gutter. I'm ready for more rain now!
I wanted to get my second challenge for the week finished and uploaded. I needed one more photograph of my cat. I was after one where I was above her and she was looking up towards me. After trailing around for far too long after her, I managed to get a head on capture. It will have to do. It has been an interesting exercise actually as the different angles have shown different intent. It's more obvious when in a collection rather than just the odd image. It'll give me more of an idea of what to look for with an animal if I'm after a particular story to tell.

I was out before it was light as I wanted a good walk before seeing to chores. I was so glad I made the effort because I was at the top of the mountain for sunrise. It will only be another few weeks before I'll be able to see it rising from the horizon; today it was coming up behind one of the lower hills so was fairly intense.
Then it was off down to the coast. I had some places to visit to get a water pump repaired, buy some vegetable plants and fill up some buckets with sand at the builder's yard.
Of course there had to be time for a beach visit so both Nell and I could stretch our legs. I walked towards the place where river meets sea and was horrified at what I saw. There has been a tremendous amount of silt washed down, together with loads of rubbish. The large area of fresh water which attracts wildlife is drastically reduced and the cane has encroached significantly. Sad.

Just in time I turned eastwards on my walk and was treated to a view of the sun as it rose into cloud; it was glorious. I'd decided to have a long walk as I knew I'd be working in the garden clearing weeds later - sedentary and back breaking work although hugely satisfying when looking back to see what's been accomplished. Looking out for subjects to photo for my multiple angles challenge I came across a huge spider's web and decided to make this my study. I wanted to see what shapes and forms I might be able to capture using various angles. I particularly liked that I was able to introduce some bokeh into my images as well. Now I just need to find an animated subject!

I was in the place I wanted to be to try to capture the rising sun this morning. I saw yesterday that it might rise right through the tunnel effect of trees I captured yesterday. I took a route which enabled me to watch emerging colours as the sun made its way up from behind the lower mountains. It is so uplifting to watch a scene such as that unfolding; a great start to the day.
Then it was off to the coast and a food shop followed by a trip to the beach; an antidote after the supermarket charge. There was a funny incident at the till. I'd bought a packet of spaghetti and as I lifted it on to the till belt, an end of it broke open and the whole lot fell on to the belt and floor. Ooops, I had to finish lifting my stuff from the trolley working around it, crunching noises emanating when I inadvertently trod onto the mess!
I needed to find an animated subject, human or animal and photograph multiple angles for my photographic challenge for this week. I found an admirable subject in Tipsy. If there was ever an animated animal, it is she, absolutely crazy! Plenty of opportunities for different angles, however I had no control whatsoever over what to capture, it was simply a case of clicking the shutter like mad.

Leaving home whilst it was still dark, I hoped I'd be able to get around the mountain without too much disturbance. Yesterday, I seemed to start off all the dogs in the area because I bumped into someone I know whose dog started to bark and it had a knock on effect. I like it quiet and peaceful when I'm out early and enjoying what's on offer.
It was beautiful and peaceful and although it was clear there'd be no glorious sunrise, the clouds during the "blue hour" certainly provided a spectacle. I decided to climb the mountain from a low point when half way round; good preparation for my forthcoming attempt to get again to the top of Maroma, the highest mountain in the region. It was a steep climb and I was a little disappointed when about half way up, I could see that a bulldozer had passed through. It meant that a rich area of fauna and flora had been scraped away. As I passed through however, I looked up and saw part of a vivid start of a rainbow rising into the colours of the sunrise. I was tempted to push on to see if I could photograph the rainbow with Maroma in the image. I resisted though as this type of phenomena passes quickly.
Heavy rain is once again forecast so I concentrated on finishing off raising the height of the gutter outside my front entrance. I also gave my land a little more protection from soil which is seeping down from next door's excavations.

Heavy rain is forecast for the next 2/3 days, although the radar showed a window of opportunity for a walk around sunrise today. That was all the encouragement I needed to get out and have a wander. It didn't look as if there was going to be a spectacular sun rise, until the sun started to actually show itself, that is. It is so huge now it's rising virtually on the horizon and with amazing cloud formations over the mountains, it certainly turned into something spectacular.
I had taken my fish eye lens as I wanted to see what different perspectives I might be able to get using it. I found I had to swop lenses once or twice as the fish eye effect wasn't resulting in an image I wanted. It was a useful exercise though and I'm learning how to use a fixed focal length lens as well as recognise situations where it works or doesn't.
I arrived home just before the rain started. It wasn't really a huge amount, that had already been dumped in the Malaga area where some roads were flooded. Thunder storms are heading this way again tonight however, so our turn may be next.
I managed to get a fair bit of weeding done in the orchard. One of my hens (named Mildred!) joined me and was actually quite effective in scratting up some of the weeds! It's a pity I can't let them all out into the fenced area beyond their run, however there are too many foxes about to risk it. I saw a young fox this morning on my walk as I neared the top of the mountain. It wasn't too far away from where I saw the wild boar the other day. Couldn't help wondering if some habitats had been destroyed when the bulldozer went through a little while ago, and the animals have moved elsewhere.

I'm getting quite deft at getting out for a walk in between rainfall. I left home on a mission this morning looking for puddles! I knew a couple of places where the water sits and one in particular where I hoped I might be able to capture a sunrise reflection. I was there before the sun made it's way through a bank of fuggy cloud so had plenty of time to work out what I might be able to capture. Trouble was, the ground was soaking and I needed to lay down to incorporate all that I wanted. I was in a bit of a soggy mess walking home.
I needed to a tube for a pump so a trip to the coast was needed. As usual, it included a trip to the beach. It was great, there was no-one else about. Nell and I had it all to ourselves so we made the most of it. I walked quite away along the beach, passing the point where the river normally meets sea. It still hasn't broken through, however the lagoon area is extending fast with all the recent rain. Birds will maybe still thrive.
As we retraced our steps, I looked towards the mountains and could see thick clouds rolling in. By the time I was on the way back up the mountain it was raining again.

October 20th
A spectacular storm passed through during the night. There were huge claps of thunder and the lightning lit up the whole sky like a light bulb. Hail added to the cacophony of noise; it was absolute bedlam for a while as the storm seemed to swirl around the mountain.
Eventually a semblance of normality returned and the rain stopped. Nell and I were able to get out for a walk around the mountain. Water was running everywhere and it was soft underfoot. The other side of the mountain from where I live is in a mess and unless a 4x4 is used, it's unlikely that it's safe to travel that way at the moment, at least that was what I was told.
I spent much of the day involved in my photography course. My tutor has returned from a fortnight away and has now levelled me up to the penultimate stage of this phase. I am assembling 15 photos for critique and then must choose 5 to take through to a video critique involving my cohort colleagues too. I have had no difficulty in selecting 15 new photos, given my travels of late, the biggest problem is keeping to that number. I shall sit with them for a few days and then make a decision at the weekend as to which ones to go with. Meanwhile, I am going back through my photos taken in the USA and processing those which I want to keep. I have also started to scan and process some old photos from the 1980's involving my Tibetan friends.

There had been a spectacular sight last night as the sun started to go down. The clouds began to lift and the storm had passed. There was a spotlight on the sea and the colours were just beautiful; I couldn't resist a photo.
Today there was an uneventful trip to Granada and the sun shone all day. I can't say that I was inspired by much of what I saw. There was a sprinkling of snow on the mountains and the hope was that as the sun went down, so more atmosphere would be created.

It didn't really get any better in Granada as far as I was concerned. There seemed to be plenty of beggars and bin scroungers and not much else contributing to atmosphere. After a couple of hours wandering, I really didn't have many photos which inspired me. I think I just found the city somewhat souless.
I submitted my images for the final time in the photographic course; it will be interesting to see what the comments might be.

October 23rd
The clouds were grey in front of me as I started on my walk downhill this morning. I looked behind and quickly changed to hurry directly to the top of the mountain. There was a magnificent sunrise evolving and I wanted to capture as much of it as possible. Once at the top I took a series of photos to create a panorama; it was breathtaking.
As the light began to change, I thought about my challenges for the photography group for this week. I have to photograph a landscape that resembles the use of light and/or drama of any of the old painters such as Constable or Rembrandt. I like Constable's paintings, not least because he concentrated many of his scenes on rural Suufolk, near to where I lived in the UK for many years. I had quite a few ideas for possible compositions, however at this time of year, workers in the countryside are few and far between as it's between the almond and olive picking seasons. When I came across a guy from the village getting his agricultural tools out of his car I asked if I might take a photo of him once he started work. He sat down on his car and with a smile told me that the answer was no, however he'd explain why. He told me he was a pensioner and as such, he is not now allowed to work if he draws a pension. His concern was that any photo I took might finish up on the Internet and cause him problems. Of course I understood and thanked him for explaining. We chatted for a while longer and then as I made to go, he beckoned me towards a box where he had some avocados. I might not have come away with a photo, however I did get a bag of avocados instead. Fair result, I reckon!
Another sense of pleasure I had today was coming upon a puddle and in the muddy area beside it, there were footprints from trotters - the wild boar is still around! Further on, there was plenty of evidence of recent activity too with quite of bit of the ground turned over. I'm so pleased that it survives and so far seems to have been left in peace.

October 24th - 25th
Not too much time for photography with the camera over the past couple of days, however I did manage to have a go at some Photoshop techniques. Seems to be a time of meeting with friends from different countries at the moment one of whom is a photographer another an artist. Been having some really interesting and informative discussions.

October 26th & 27th
Life on the mountain is never dull, that's for sure. Getting off yesterday morning was a bit of an adventure as the heavens opened and monsoon type rain fell for quite a while. As I drove down to the coast, there were brown waterfalls everywhere and soil and debris was washed down in the pouring waters. A few hours later when I made my way home again, it was rock falls which were then the main problem. I was only able to stop and take one photo of the effects of the deluge and even then I didn't want to stay still for long as the force and quantity of water was awesome.
This morning, the clouds were still hanging and heavy and although rain threatened, I wanted to get out. The skies were dramatic and the sun managed to briefly break through. I found myself heading to where I knew there were puddles to have another go at reflections. As the water was murky it wasn't easy to capture the reflected colours, however given the colours in the sky, it probably didn't matter.
Once home, I wanted to photograph some angles of mushrooms growing in the garden. They grow and disappear quickly so although it was raining I carried on. I was rewarded with some water drops forming on the head of the mushrooms as the rain fell.

What a glorious morning. The air was cool and fresh early on, however after a while walking and reaching the sunny side of the mountain, it soon warmed. The light seemed incredible; whether that was because of the somewhat gloomy days we've had of late I'm not sure. It seemed to filter through leaves and create such beauty.
The beauty of the day continued as I met with a friend and we headed to the village to meet with some more friends; visitors from Italy! It had been a last minute decision by them to come and we were all so happy that they did. It was so good to catch up with them and relive our times together earlier in the year. We're all planning to make sure that we will have other trips to Italy as well as trips in the opposite direction.
My photo challenges for this week are to take photos incorporating/interpreting the word "dexterity" in the general category. In the portraiture category I must incorporate/interpret the word "elevate". I knew what I wanted to do for the dexterity challenge and found it a fairly simple and satisfying exercise to merge my photos to produce an out of bounds image with water seemingly flowing out of the image.

October 29th
One of those days which turns out very different from that which is anticipated! After completing a few things needing attention on the coast, I decided to go and have a look at an area high up and with waterfalls. I thought there wouldn't be too many people about and inititally I was right. I was able to wander and enjoy the sound of birds, running water and workmen in the distance. Three waterfalls were running and I played around looking for the best composition. There were quite a few dragonflies too although they weren't brightly coloured.
It was so peaceful, however as I headed up, I could hear children's voices - lots of them! I wanted to scout around the area in which they were playing and quite a few of the girls came to see and fuss Nell. I took several photos and was focussing on some trees when a runner crossed in front of me. He was sitting on some steps regaining his breath when I passed and we had a bit of a chat. Seems as if he'd just run up and down Maroma, just under 2 hours to run up and 1 hour 20 mins to run down! We had a bit of a laugh when I told him I'd be up there tomorrow and would be walking! We conversed in Spanish, however it turns out he was Belgian and married to a Spanish lady. I love it when that happens, I don't know whether he spoke any English, however he was quite scathing about the lack of desire of many Brits to learn Spanish. At least I was able to counter his view somewhat, especially as he complimented me on my Spanish.
On my way back down, the kids came into view. There were loads of them including supervisors. I started to drive slowly through the throng and the girls who'd been fussing Nell, spotted her sitting in the back of the car. They started calling out to her and others turned to see what was going on. The car was surrounded with kids taking photos of Nell sitting majestically in the back. Eventually moving on, the next issue to deal with was a number of lads trying to thumb a lift. What a happy lot they all were, plenty of laughs and not one truculent teenager in sight.
My last stop was to chat with one of the forestry workers. He was taking a break, however two others were working close by strimming. I asked if there would be a problem if I took photos and with a friendly grin, the guy told me to take as many photos as I wanted. A good day all round.
October 30th - 31st
I couldn't have asked for better conditions for trekking in the mountains than yesterday's weather; it was ideal. It was also the best day of the week as the weather is set to close in and rain again now.
Collecting a couple of friends, we arrived to meet the rest of the group trekking with us. We were 15 in all. The last time I made this trek we were in cloud the whole time and I was unable to get my bearings or see anything from the top. This time it was very different. The views across to the province of Granada were stunning. There was snow on Valeta the second highest peak in the Sierra Nevada. Deciduous trees were beginning to change colours and stood out clearly against the green pines and barren white bedrock. In all we saw 32 Ibex goats who seemed completely at ease with our presence, albeit somewhat away from where they grazed.
The group itself comprised mainly British; there were also a few Dutch people and everybody seemed to get on really well. In fact, so well that there's the possibility of an informal walking group coming into being because of it. There were lots of laughs and complete exhilaration at reaching the summit, not to mention the journey up and down to the starting/finishing point in Landrovers. A memorable day and with quite a few photos to remind me of the experience.
This morning I wanted a reasonable walk as there's a severe weather warning out and if I get out over the weekend it may have to be by car. One of my friends with whom I'd trekked the day before also had the same idea as we caught up with each other half way round the mountain! Obviously no repercussions for either of us following yesterday's exertions.
