Day 305 - 1st November, 2014
Off out for a final walk before returning to Spain, Jack and I set off with the idea of capturing landscape images because the clouds were almost picture perfect. We took a route which I knew would bring us on to a narrow country lane and over which the branches of trees met. My hope was that some of the trees would have autumnal colours.
As we walked, so we enjoyed the views of horses and sheep grazing. In one field there was one almost black sheep amongst otherwise white ones! In other fields, crops were growing still relatively small and green in visible rows. It made for some good images with large, colourful trees on the horizon.
On the return leg of our walk we passed a wood. Jack noticed some squirrels running so we started to walk along quietly. I couldn't believe my eyes when I spotted a squirrel sitting so close to where we were standing. It was so well camouflaged I almost missed it. Both Jack and I were able to get some good images before it suddenly made a run for it. It's the photo I most enjoyed capturing and is my choice for today. A bit further along the road, we suddenly came face to face with a huge pig! I don't know who was more surprised, however I did have the presence of mind to take a photo! I don't know if it was a wild one or not and didn't hang around to investigate further. A lovely long walk with as ever, plenty of memories to add to those of the week as a whole.

Day 306 - 2nd November, 2014
A really early start to the day to travel from the UK back to Spain. There weren't any opportunities for photos at the airport as not much was going on at all. En route however, the sunrise was amazing. The clouds started to turn red as the sun rose, however it wasn't on the horizon it was happening. It seemed almost as if there was an eruption taking place. I took several photos as the sun rise developed. I also took some photos of a plane which was going in the same direction as we were, slightly slower and slightly lower, however it wasn't too far away from us. Eventually we started to come in to Malaga in thick cloud. I was able to capture an image of one of the lakes we'd been to earlier in the year just before we entered the cloud and visibility was much reduced. It was the last image I captured today and is the best!

Day 307 - 3rd November, 2014
A busy day sorting things ready for an anticipated deluge tomorrow. Of course, having spent time ensuring gutters and drains are free of debris, it's more than likely that it will prove to be a damp squib. Not to worry, at least the work has been done.
As I was clearing away dead leaves and vegetation I realised just how little colour there is in the garden right now. I guess it has much to do with lack of rainfall. I decided to gather some small flowers which were around and had colour and randomly drop them on to some of the dead leaves I'd collected. I really like the way water brings out colour and texture of the dead leaves so sprayed some water onto my collection to see what it would do for my coloured items. I was pleasantly surprised and spent some time taking photos from different angles and depth of field. The image I've chosen is because the water droplets enhance the colouring of the rose and the rest of the items provide a colourful blurred backdrop

Day 308 - 4th November, 2014
The forecast was right and I heard rain this morning when I awoke in the early hours. However it wasn't the rain which disturbed me; there was a hoolie blowing outside and the noise was like an approaching train. It was difficult getting the front door open as I pushed against the forces of nature exerting tremendous pressure in the opposite direction! After all that effort too, Nell decided she wasn't bothered about braving the elements!
The rain soon eased, however the wind didn't calm down until mid afternoon. I was going out anyway to blow away the cobwebs, however a slight drop in the wind made photographing a little easier! I wasn't sure what images I'd be able to find to capture. Close ups were out with so much wind and not much had changed in the countryside over the last week or so since I'd last walked out.
I thought I'd battle my way to the top of the mountain with the wind still fairly strong en route. Once up there I steadied myself and looked around. There was an amazing sight of the edge of the front which had brought all the rain being pushed away by the winds. The cloud patterns were awesome too and when I spotted some rays of the sun also evident, I knew I had my photo for today.

Day 309 - 5th November, 2014
A day of achievement in so many areas today. Waiting at the meeting point for Brian and Tipsy I watched in fascination as a guy arrived in the car park and proceeded to change from a businessman into a racing cyclist! Obviously the location was ideal as a starting point for whatever trip he had planned. I took some photos as he departed. Later, on the beach a couple of youngsters on motorbikes were having fun on the sand and I managed to capture a couple of images before they rapidly disappeared. One of these I have chosen as my photo for today.
There was also a chance to practice taking photos of the gulls on the beach as they flew about in the strong winds. Spray flying from the waves as they crashed was also a photo opportunity, although the waves themselves were really too small to make a spectacular scene.
I was happy that I had managed to try out my skills at capturing a variety of moving objects today and I can definitely see an improvement compared to my efforts during the summer months!

Day 310 - 6th November, 2014
I set off for a walk this morning with a particular aim in mind. I'd been reading some articles about black and white images and wanted to see if I could put into practice that which I'd read. The sun was just beginning to rise sufficiently to create different shades and contrast. I took some photos of the mountains and lower hills to see what I might be able to do with them in black and white. I also tried looking for texture which also translates into black and white images well.
I was bent low capturing an image of a dried thistle against cloud and blue sky when a large shadow passed over me. I looked up and couldn't believe what I was seeing. Dozens of huge birds flying so close overhead, when I stood up I felt I could almost touch them. They weren't circling so I assumed they were migrating.
My camera had been set for close up photography, a rapid adjustment was needed and then I aimed and shot! They were so close that focussing wasn't easy. The group that was nearest to me quickly disappeared although I did manage to capture an image of the last of them as it headed towards and just above me. This is the image I have posted for today. Below me were more and in the distance yet more heading my way. I thought at first I was looking at Red Kites, however some research indicated that they were Vultures; they had seven fingers at the end of their wings whereas Kites have only five. Evidently they over winter south of the Sahara and are classified as an endangered species because of a rapid decline in numbers in some areas. Seems that southern Spain may agree with them as more have been seen over wintering here in recent years. What an amazing experience it was.
I discovered that black and white images need a different approach compared to that which I was generally using. I had tended to expect the white in any image to provide a contrast. It's not that simple and although I had a few images I could have used, I want to give it more thought and pay more attention to textures.

Day 311 - 7th November, 2014
A long walk on the beach with just Nell was what I anticipated when I went to the coast this morning. I'd only just left the car however, when a largish four-legged creature bounded up to me and then tried to entice Nell to play. I realised it was the wolf from the mountain. It's owner was calling and it took no notice. Assuming he would come and collect it, I walked on and then saw him drive away! It wasn't my problem so I continued my walk with Nell closely accompanied by the wolf. At one point the beach was filled with gulls and both Nell and the wolf charged towards them; Nell was able to actually outrun the wolf! It was quite a spectacle as they forced the gulls to rise into the air. It is one of these shots that I have chosen for my photo of today although I had other options as the wolf is quite photogenic, especially when there isn't a fence in front of him.
Eventually, when I decided to head back towards my car I saw the wolf's owner appear in his car driving along the beach towards us. He was furious when he caught up with us and I couldn't help think that it was no surprise the wolf wasn't keen to go back to him.

Day 312 - 8th November, 2014
It was a start to the day of different weather patterns which made capturing images varied and productive right from the off.
I first managed to photograph the moon as it was beginning to set before daylight. High cloud gave the moon a mystical appearance.
Cloud later built up and rain threatened. Then a fantastic rainbow appeared. At first the colours were visible and pale. As I watched, their intensity increased and I took the opportunity to go out into the street and capture it before it faded. About 10 mins later, the sun was shining and not a rain cloud in sight. The rainbow was such a spectacular sight, it was an easy choice for a photo for today.

Day 313 - 9th November, 2014
A mixed bag today as far as phography was concerned. The first part was spent knocking holes in a wall to accommodate various cables. I did however, take some photos of the mess I made as well as improvements as I made good that which I'd taken apart.
The afternoon was spent away from the building work and mess which remained. As I left the mountain so I saw two Red Kites circling in the valley looking for a thermal. I was able to identify them from the fingers at the end of their wings and their colouring. Another clue was that there were only two of them; the norm for these birds. They rose too quickly to be able to capture a reasonable image.
I was hoping to be able to find a scene which would look good in black and white. As I made made my way down the mountain, I could see a huge build up of cloud over the mountain range. Stopping to take a photo, I was really pleased later on to see that I had managed to capture and image with sufficient texture and contrast to make it a good black and white candidate. This image is my selection for today.

Day 314 - 10th November, 2014
Such a glorious day. There was clarity both of the mountains and sea; it was as if everything was so close and in detail it was possible to touch it all. We headed down to a new beach for Nell and me. It is a haunt of Brian and Tipsy's and only accessible for dogs in the off season. We weren't alone with our dogs, plenty of other people had the same idea. Nonetheless there were plenty of photographic opportunities during the time we were there and before the area began to fill up too much.
The sea sparkled and I had a go at capturing the bouncing light to create a bokeh effect. I also used my ND filter to darken the scene of waves hitting the black rocks, hoping that the milky effect I achieved would contrast with the blackness of the rocks. In the end however, the image which most caught my eye today was one which showed a certain amount of bokeh together with the beautiful translucent colours of the sea. The detail of the rock completes the image .

Day 315 - 11th November, 2014
It was a good job that both my camera and I were wearing our wet weather gear this morning! I left early thinking I'd be back before the rain started - wrong! I was about halfway into my hour walk when the rain started. It was so still however, that the rain wasn't really a problem and I was able to compose images. Mind you, given that everywhere was dull and grey, there really wasn't too much to concentrate on.
Back at home I decided to set the first fire of the winter and clean out the flue before it is needed in earnest when the cold weather comes. The colours were absolutely gorgeous and I just had to have some photos on this otherwise grey day. I have chosen one for my photo of today.

Day 316 - 12th November, 2014
Not too many photographic opportunities today. It was dull and grey first thing although it did begin to brighten up as the day progressed. I was able to have a look at shadows when the sun shone with sufficiently strength. I used a selection of forks and spoons to create shadows. It was interesting to see the various shapes created simply by the angle of the sun.
Later in the afternoon I had time to set up a tripod and have a go at capturing a time lapse of cloud movement. It didn't look as if it would be a success and the amount of cloud wasn't great. I didn't think there was much movement until I processed the 25 images I'd taken. My photo for today shows much more movement than was evident over the 10 minutes or so I spent taking the photos. The wind was also blowing and I expected a more blurred foreground. All in all, I am happy with my experiment and the results I achieved.

Day 317 - 13th November, 2014
A great day out with Sylvia and our dogs. We headed towards the mountain pass which would take us to the woods at the base of the tallest mountain in the region, Maroma. As we approached the pass, it was possible to see cloud building up and spilling over. I hoped that it would mean some good photo opportunities in the woods.
As we left the main road and started along a track, I stopped the car and was preparing to get out to take a photo when a roe deer ran across the road right in front of us. It was a surprise for both of us and we just sat and watched as it ran through the trees and eventually disappeared.
As we made our way further into the forest area, so a glorious display of autumn colours awaited us. We stopped and walked around under various colourful canopies, the dogs having a ball running through the fallen leaves.
Deciding to walk to higher ground, we met a guy with a covered basket. Being curious I asked what he'd been collecting and he showed us an array of colourful mushrooms of differing sizes. He confirmed that they were all edible and he knew what varieties he was picking. Further up the hill we came across a group of people, also with baskets; it is obviously the time for mushroom picking in the area. I found some huge and colourful examples to photograph.
A day out for Sylvia and I wouldn't be complete without some sort of "odd experience" and sure enough, today was no exception. As we walked back to the car, one of three donkeys in the area decided it was going to confront us. Both dogs weren't happy with the aggression being shown and neither were we! We tried to move away only to find the donkey sticking close behind us. Trying to walk away casually and slowly was difficult as the donkey nosed at the dogs and tried to nudge us! The only thing I tried to concentrate on was making sure its back end didn't suddenly swerve around! Thankfully it's attention was diverted by some of the mushroom pickers and we used the opportunity to make a hasty retreat to the car!

Day 318 - 14th November, 2014
It was obvious that today's photo would have something to do with the weather. I wasn't able to set anything up to photograph indoors as there was too much going on. Outside it was either raining or we were in cloud.
I had a wander when the rain eased to see what caught my attention - not a lot really! I had a go at depth of field with the drops of water on the washing line as well as raindrops on the windows. The best I could come up with that I was happy to upload as my photo for the day in the time and light available, was an image of a wet Seville orange. They at least will certainly benefit from this rain and the raindrops on the fruit provide different textures when wet.
I also had a go at capturing the cloud as it swept around the mountain, sometimes thicker than others, however always fairly dense.

Day 319 - 15th November, 2014
A rude awakening at 2am. The wind suddenly increased and windows started to rattle, then a door flew open! I'd not shut it completely the night before and the strength of the wind was sufficient to force it open. Once the door and windows were secured, I was wide awake and didn't really get back to sleep afterwards. I arose to a beautiful, clear and sunny day. However there wasn't too much opportunity to get out with my camera and savour it as there was work to be finished off inside.
The fact that I hadn't been able to get out for photos was more than offset when the sun went down. The sunset was glorious and distant headlands were clearly visible. The sea turned red with reflections from the colours of the vibrant sky. It was a beautiful end to the day as well.

Day 320 - 16th November, 2014
An upside down day, going for a walk as it was getting dark rather than first thing in the morning. It's a shooting day and I prefer to keep away from possible encounters with a gun barrell!
It was a glorious day, so still and clear with fine wispy clouds. I was able to work outside for some of the day and enjoy the warmth. I also took a break and watched the hens and cockerel enjoying scratting in the orchard. I'd taken my camera with me and spent some time trying to capture the beauty of the cockerel. His feathers are bluey-black and shimmer in the sunlight. It was his head though, in the end which really caught my attention. His comb and wattles are quite incredible. This image is the one I have chosen for today.
Walking around the mountain after sunset, the wolf was howling, there were a few gunshots in the distance, otherwise it was quiet and peaceful. I took some photos of mountain tops in silhouette and just as I reached home, so the dying rays of the sun sent up a single red beam briefly into the sky.

Day 321 - 17th November, 2014
I wanted to set to with getting rid of weeds this morning. It was still, with not a breath of wind and I was about before the bees would be searching for pollen. A short walk with Nell and then I was adopting my mountain goat demeanour. I surprised myself how nimble I was climbing the steep banks; I think it had something to do with the fact that the soil was still soft and I could get good foot holds as I climbed along and upwards. It meant I was able to get done in double quick time and enabled me to tackle another job, burning garden rubbish which had accumulated over the summer months. It's a task I undertake for my neighbours too as they are generally here during times when there is a fire ban. Once the fire is under way as well as feeding it, there's a bit of standing around to do to ensure it doesn't spread. I used the opportunity to take some photographs as the smoke swirled and danced. It's easy to get mesmerised by the movement and colours and I tried to capture the essence of what I was seeing in the photo I have chosen for today.

Day 322 - 18th November, 2014
Off early and down to the coast for some shopping. How anyone can enjoy such an activity beats me, however as it involved buying some materials so I can make a wood basket for indoors amongst other things, it was bearable.
I didn't get a chance, or have the inspiration to take any photos until on the way back from Malaga when a stop off at the dog beach was made. Walking along to find a different angle and composition from images captured at various stops here during the summer months, I was happy with an image of a small bay curving round towards the port of Malaga. The colours and shapes of the buildings in the bay reminded me of scenes from Scandanavian countries and is the photo I have selected today. It's more of a picture postcard image than anything with much technical excellence, however, it is pleasing nonetheless and at the beginning of this project, I would have been overjoyed to have captured such an image.

Day 323 - 19th November, 2014
There are times when I need to remind myself of the lenses that I always cart around with me. Today I did just that and enjoyed time capturing macro images. What I was after in particular, was to create an image with something of interest in the foreground and a bokeh effect due to light and water in the background. Using my macro lens I was able to zoom in on some French Lavendar and because of dew on the grass behind, I was able to achieve a bokeh effect. The bokeh wasn't as pronounced as I had hoped, however it's there and created from minute drops of dew on short grass, unbelievable really!
As the sun went down tonight, so a mist descended in the valleys. It did nothing for the sunset, however it's impossible not to stand and look at the mystical views it creates. It really is a beautiful part of the world in which I live.

Day 324 - 20th November, 2014
A day out with friends, catching up and sharing new experiences. There was a bit of work to do initially, then it was off road and exploring. We walked up some hills and reached one of the old watch towers along the coast. It was possible to see for miles from this vantage point as well as other towers strategically placed further along the coast.
After up the hills we made our way down to the beach. The waves were frothy and I had a go at capturing the foam as it came up the beach. I'd had such an image in my mind and had tried a few times before without success. This time however, I was reasonably satisfied with the movement depicted as well as textures and a creaminess I was able to capture.
It was a great day and one of those where there's a reluctance to draw it to a close. We were even chucked out of a restaurant we visited to eat, only realising belatedly that we were the only ones left!

Day 325 - 21st November, 2014
Well that was nearly a lesson learnt the hard way! I deleted my photos from the camera card before finishing importing them onto my laptop. Thankfully I know a computer savvy guy who was able to recover the photos I had taken en route and actually at Cabo de Gata. Phew, I suppose that if I make a similar mistake again I shan't just assume everything is gone, although prevention is better than cure.
Apart from learning about file recovery, today was basically spent discovering the area and possible photo opportunities to follow up during the four days we'll be here.
The coast is rugged and as we are near to a group of rocks called "Las Sirenas" I took the opportunity to take some photos of this somewhat forbidding coastline. The light created an atmosphere of mean and moody, which for me, is representative of this area both from the land side and the sea side.

Day 326 - 22nd November, 2014
A less rugged, although just as spectacular coastal exploration today. The light was dull although the sun kept trying to come through and at times, succeeding. It was windy although off shore, so there weren't too many crashing waves to be found, inititally. Making our way to various beaches however, we finally found one where the rock formations were interesting both in their formation and also their make up and the waves were coming in with some force.
I spent quite a bit of time playing around with the ND filters to create milky water, as well as images which froze the moment a wave hit a rock and where the spray reached high. My photo for today however, is one of the windmills which can be seen in this part of the world. There are none in the area in which I live so I am using the opportunity to select images which are different from those I'd normally be capturing in and around home.

Day 327 - 23rd November, 2014
A full and productive day. Starting off with less cloud and more wind, as the day went on, so the wind dropped and it became hotter. Incredible to believe that it's the end of November. We travelled along the coast investigating some of the places we didn't get to yesterday. We then headed inland and came to one of the strangest places I've been to in a long time. We only headed that way because there was an information centre indicated. Entering the village, a whole area of houses was fenced off and obviously abandoned and derelict. Further on we saw signs to a gold mine and followed them. It was an amazing place and seemed completely alien to anywhere else we'd visited. Later on, I looked for further information and it seems that this particular gold mine closed in 1990, however in the 1950's it was the largest gold mine in western Europe! It's so interesting to stumble upon such gems.
After stopping for lunch on the coast, we headed towards Almeria with the intention of staying until after dark to capture images of the town at night. The place was virtually dead however, probably because it was Sunday. I walked to the Alcazabar and the Cathedral and explored the old part of the town. There was some lovely details to be seen and I photographed some of them. One in particular, a door knocker, caught my eye and it is the photo I have chosen for today. Before completing the photography exploits of the day, we headed to the rocky coast and captured rocks in the light of the setting sun.

Day 328 - 24th November, 2014
Rain was forecast for today, however it turned out to be another glorious one. We took the opportunity to revisit some of the places we'd been to when low cloud cast a different light compared to the sunshine of today.
One of my favourite places is the Arrecife de las Sirenas, a series of rocks jutting out from the coastline. This time the sea has been calm, however it can be extremely forbidding in rough weather. I was able to clamber out on to some of the rock formations to capture different angles from previous visits.
Carrying on along this coastline, the numerous types of minerals contained in the rocks became more evident. The colours were amazing in their variety and reaching the highest point it was possible to see for miles to the north and south.
In the afternoon I took a long walk around the salt lakes where flamingoes are present. They are not so numerous at the moment compared with early in the year during the breeding season. It was possible however, to see young and older birds close up as I walked compared to views available from the hides scattered around. It is one of these images which I have chosen for my photo of today.

Day 329 - 25th November, 2014
From sea level to up high in the Sierra Nevada in a few hours! A change in scenery and in temperature. I even reached the snow line.
Leaving Cabo de Gata after breakfast the plan was to stop off in the town of Granada itself and take some photos looking out towards snow. Nearing the town however, it was clear that there was so little snow, that none would show in any image taken from the town. Deciding to head towards the mountain instead, the views became more and more spectacular. Passing at first through cloud and then above it we reached as far as was possible by car. Nell and I then continued on foot and eventually reached snow. We even met another Border Collie way up high and the look on Nell's face when I asked her to sit in the snow was such a picture, I had to take a photo!
There were so many diverse mages to choose from today, however the one I have selected is of the Observatory perched on high. I was heading towards the snow and looked back. The cloud was filling in the valley and coming towards me. I couldn't help but stand and watch - it was a magnificent sight, beauty and danger heading my way. The size of the Observatory conveys the absolute scale of this majesty.

Day 330 - 26th November, 2014
From first to last light, I was on a mission to sort out the mess created by some extremely high winds whilst I was away. Having found myself at the mercy of the elements on occasions, I am fully aware of the awesome power of nature. However, the damage caused indicated some really extreme weather. Wooden poles 4cm square were simply snapped, metal was mangled and an awning was ripped to shreds. It must've been an awesome experience to have witnessed. As heavy rain is forecast for the next few days, there was nothing else for it but to knuckle down and sort out the mess as well as clear out the drains and gutters again in readiness.
It didn't leave much time for taking photos although as I worked I thought about possible options. The pile of debris from the aftermath grew and I took some shots using depth of field to home in on some of the detail of the damage and using the rest of the pile to provide a blurred background. It worked well and I intended to turn it into a black and white image. However, as I went to shut in the hens, I saw an opportunity to create a bokeh effect using the setting sun and a red rose in the foreground. It worked a treat and is the photo I have chosen for today.

Day 331 - 27th November, 2014
Nature’s orchestra was in full flow this morning. The promised rain arrived and brought with it thunder and lightning, water spouts, tornados, hail, wind and floods. To top it all, there were a couple of earthquakes recorded in the area too!
Living high on a mountain has quite a few benefits, one of them being that water doesn’t accumulate; it runs downhill leaving us drying out fairly quickly. I made a few forays outside in between brief interludes of relative calm. It’s as well to keep water run offs heading towards the gutters whenever possible.
Cloud was low and of varying colours depending on the amounts of rain held. Lightning flashed from every direction as the storm circled. It was brilliant to watch and try to anticipate where the next bolt would be. I had an attempt at capturing an image of rain laden vegetation when the sun peeked through briefly – the bokeh effect was everywhere, providing spectacular backdrops.
I took the opportunity to capture the stair rods of rain which were falling. There was also a period of absolute monsoon conditions which I captured; it was as if the clouds split and dumped a load en mass. Absolutely awesome conditions! My photo for today is of the deluge in all its glory!

Day 332 - 28th November, 2014
It was the turn of nature’s choir to perform this morning. The wind whipped up and around the mountain. Shrill and loud, the high noises created an eerie sound, whilst lower rumblings provided a resounding accompaniment. It crossed my mind that it might be worth a trek to the top of the mountain to catch the sunrise. A glance outside showed it would be pointless. I thought maybe sunset could be a better option and watched during the afternoon as clouds began to lift. Nell and I went for a walk and headed towards the top, however there was not gong to be a sunset of note and I wasn't able to see if we'd had snowfall on Maroma.
What I did see though, were some fantastic photo opportunties for close ups of rain laden plants and leaves. Everywhere simply shimmered like some fairy tale land. I have chosen one of these close up images for my photo of the day. Everywhere may be sodden underfoot, however above, the rain produced beauty.

Day 333 - 29th November, 2014
A welcome sight this morning - the International Space Station passed overhead and I was able to see it so clearly. It's at least a couple of weeks since I've been able to see the stars so clearly in a dark, unpolluted sky. As I watched the ISS, so one satellite passed it at right angles and another was not far behind. It was a busy sky which also included flashes of sheet lightning.
I fetched my camera and set it up on the tripod. My brother had been talking with me about a mirror-up setting on my camera just the day before and as I'd sussed it out, decided to give it a go. Not really sure of what I was doing or trying to achieve, at first I wasn't able to capture anything other than coastal lights. Then it all came together and I captured the image I have chosen as my photo of today. Chuffed is what I am - bring on the next storm!

Day 334 - 30th November, 2014
A rude awakening this morning! I briefly thought the noise was to do with an earthquake or perhaps a large wild animal trapped behind the house. Checking with a torch I could see lots of rock in the back alley. Turned out that part of two of the stone and cement walls had succumbed to the weight of sodden earth and come down.
Deciding to go out for a walk when it was light and before I set to on the repair work, I could see that my theme for a photograph was going to be images of the cloud. It was heavy and hanging and cast a darkness in places over the countryside. Coming back down the hill the sun showed momentarily and lit up mountains in the distance. The clouds were lined up as if they were ready to slide over the patch of sunlight. I took a photo quickly to capture the moment and this image is the one I have chosen for today.
