August 1st
A couple of full and enjoyable days. Last night we were down in the village for another Flamenco show. The posters showed a group who sang and danced and I was anticipating being able to capture more colourful images than at the previous show. It certainly started well with two men and two women turning up with their equipment. They also carried clothes bags and I assumed it would be colourful dresses.
The performance started with a trio and I was sure they'd sing for the first session then dance for another. I was wrong! However, as the performance ended and everyone started for home, we passed the group packing up and they were dancing for fun. I stopped and focussed my camera and one of the group asked that if I had some photos to share would I send them on to them. I mentioned I'd been waiting all night to capture images of flamenco dancing in traditional dress and was invited along to any of their gigs in the future!
I had a nice surprise this morning when I was informed that one of my images had been selected for the back cover of The Landscape Photography Magazine. I downloaded the magazine and there is was! Happy me!

August 2nd
Needing to revisit a job which I thought I had completed, I set to early incase the heat returned. It didn't and as a result I was also able to get on with sorting out a few other things, including completing this week's photographic challenge. The final (has to be!) letters of the alphabet, V, W, X, Y and Z required images and I was surprised just how easily they suddenly came to mind. I have a vineyard, the walkway at the airport was already in the bag, for X I was presented with an XBOX, Y was a yellow yolk and for Z, I had played around with zooming in and out of the coastal lights.
The yolk was the most frustrating item to photograph. I wasted 4 eggs trying to get a perfect yolk to sit tall and rounded to no avail! Eventually I was actually pleased with what I was able to capture as the swirls and different contours created when yet another yolk broke, afforded a more interesting image than simply a yellow yolk!
It's obvious that the alphabet challenge has not only been a bit of a struggle for some of my fellow cohort members, there is relief and humour in some of the images now appearing for the final letters - Y for wires was one which made me smile. Now all I need to do this week is to find two complete strangers to ask if I may take their photographs using whatever light is available. Simple really!

I do believe we had some rain last night; not a lot, however even a drop is virtually unheard of in August. It is a much more comfortable level of heat now as it's cooler at night, pretty much in line with how it's been most of the 20 odd years I have lived out here. I think it's fair to say though, that the intensity of the prolonged heatwaves throughout July, was unusual.
Today it was chore time on the coast, however there was time to squeeze in a visit to a recently opened dog park. Well it was supposed to have been opened in May, however when I found it and drove all around it, I could see all the gates were locked. Inside, it looked a great place to be able to take dogs with various pieces of equipment such as slides, climbs and tyres spread throughout. Not much use when it's shut though. I'll try again and hope it's just on Mondays it's shut like some restaurants!
I saw a photo editing technique which changed images into abstracts and I liked the look. I had a go with a few different images of mine and really like the effect I was able to achieve. I think there should be potential for using the adjusted images for more than a simple abstract sometime. I have a few ideas I'd like to try out.

August 5th
A successful day which started way before sunrise. It was MOT time for my ageing car (16 years old) and my appointment was at 7am. I was surprised to see a large crowd waiting for the office to open to join the queue when I arrived just after 6.30am. As I had already booked an appoinment, I pushed my way through the crowd and was soon into the system. My car passed and I was much relieved to obtain my green sticker, valid until August next year.
Then it was on to the coast for breakfast. It was supposed to be chocolate and churros, however we were too early! A toasted roll was a great alternative.
Next stop was the bank and although there was 10 mins waiting until opening time it was great to be able to sit and watch the town beginning to stir. I captured some street shots as the sun began to rise and provide contrast. I also saw a really big bulldog with it's owners. Mindful of my task to take a photo of two complete strangers for my photography course, I bit the bullet and approached the couple. The guy was very happy to oblige and it was clear the couple were besotted with their dog as the lady stood behing me trying to get the dog to look at her so I could capture the best image. I had a chat with them about the dog and then moved on. Mission accomplished, well at least one in the bag!
After the coast it was into the mountains and a river located in a wooded area. It was great being able to tramp through the water and keep cool; Nell also loved the water and provided some great photo opportunities.

August 6th & 7th
A memorable day in many ways. First off the English cricket team absolutely demolished the Australian team dismissing them all for 60 runs. I watched the game throughout the morning and couldn't believe what I was seeing - moments never to forget. The evening saw us in a nearby coastal town; not my favourite place, however we were there to support a friend at his first live gig as a solo artist. It was hot and muggy and when we left we headed towards the sea in the hope of some air. What we found though was the place heaving with people. It didn't take long before we called it a night and headed home, however I had managed to capture my second image of a complete stranger for my photography challenge. I approached one of the artists exhibiting work in an area inundated with tourists. She obliged, however put on her sunglasses before I could take a photo. Still, I had risen to the challenge and achieved.
On the way home though, the noise in the car started to change and I was wondering what was causing it when I was told that the passenger side window was moving slowly downwards! The warm air made its presence felt immediately even though the aircon was on. As we made our way back up the mountain, so the window quite gracefully and silently slid right down into the door! Quite funny really, however as it was past midnight, a solution had to wait until the next day.
When morning arrived, I looked up what would be involved to actually get inside the door and decided to ring the mechanic! It wasn't so much the difficulty of the job, it was more about what I'd do when I'd taken apart the door! I was told I could go straight away and after waiting for a while, was able to see a temporary repair job done. I booked my car in for the following week to have a broken cable in the door, replaced, together with a couple of small jobs picked up at the MOT.
Then it was off to the coast again to start the first leg of the birthday celebrations involving the beach, a pizza and go-kart racing.

Yesterday was truly a full on day; another day in the life of a now, 15 year old too! The sea was warm and still and it was after 8pm before we left and headed to the pizza parlour selected.
It looked inititally as if the sea would be rough, however the strong winds soon disappeared and a pleasant few hours were spent relaxing and watching dogs of all shapes and sizes interacting. The pizza parlour is located in a coastal town where it is almost impossible to find a parking space during August. Deciding to park on the outskirts of the town, we had a lovely walk and I was able to capture some images for my photo challenge of this week, incorporating numbers 1-5.
Then it was off to the go-karts. Whilst the boys played I had a great time panning for images as the karts hurtled round. It was a humid night and after drinks we made our way back up the mountain. In the village there was a rock band playing so we stopped off to see what was going on. It was pretty colourful and certainly loud! Wandering around I could see that the type of music being played was not to everyone's liking. There were quite a few empty tables, mind you, it was after 11pm. We hung around for a while taking photos and then made our way back home. The end to a brilliant and memorable day.
Today, I was set and ready to watch the inevitable; England regaining the Ashes. I'd met at the mechanic's place, another lady who enjoyed cricket as much as I do and who had actually been scorer for her local cricket club at one time. It was brilliant being able to talk with someone who shares a similar passion and who "gets it"!

A day at the lake today catching up with friends. There was a heavy shower of rain en route, however it didn't last long. The lake was so still and the reflections were sharp and colourful. There were several people around working on their boats. I started talking with one who was restoring a wooden boat; he had a leak and was looking to repair it. Whilst he worked he was happy that I took photos.
After a lazy and enjoyable day we started to make our way home. The beautiful scenes just couldn't be passed without stopping to take some photos. We were in for a surprise as well because at one point, a Spanish guy was just unpacking his drone. I asked if he'd mind if I took photos. Turned out that he had a border collie too and must've thought I'd be OK as he explained he'd have to work fast as it was illegal to fly them and police were hot on tracking people down who used them. He flew the drone in between trees where I guess he felt it would be less visible. Once or twice he brought it right back in towards us obviously videoing us. I kicked myself later for not swapping email addresses so we could swap our different images.
It was great watching the drone operate, however the guy very quickly packed his things away and ran back to his scooter and was away. It all took place within the space of about 10 mins; a fascinating time.

At last I managed to get to a Flamenco show which included a dancer as well as singer and guitarist. We had to book a table to participate, however it was on the beach and dogs were allowed. Not feeling particularly hungry, a salad and sweet filled the obligation I felt to at least have something more than a drink! When the performance started I thought inititally I'd be unlucky again as there was no dancer. Mid way through the second song however, a beautiful Spanish lady started a routine. It was well worth waiting for, she was superb, as were the singer an guitarist!
I went to the front to get a better angle to take some photos and just kept clicking the shutter in the hope that at least one would be good enough to submit for my upcoming critique. After a break, the group returned and this time the dancer wore another, more colourful dress. Again I took loads of photos and although I have only processed a few of the 150 or so I took, there are other keepers which I'll come back to when I have more time.
My photos have been submitted to my photography group for comments and then I shall have an important critique session with my tutor.

A night on the town! The week long feria in Malaga starts in a few days time, so a trip to the city before the fireworks started was organised now so I could take Nell as well. Anticipating a hot and sweaty city, we were pleasantly surprised at comfortable temperatures for walking once out of the car park.
We headed towards some areas I'd wanted to explore beyond the port area. It was difficult to believe we were in the city as it quickly became almost empty and quiet. Views out to sea and around the bay suddenly opened up and we spent some time just sitting on the sea wall watching numerous cats playing around in a maze of rocks.
There was quite a bit of activity in and around the port and we investigated what was going on and spending time watching. Our pace was so leisurely that we realised it was heading towards midnight and we hadn't walked up to the castle and looked out over the city. We decided to leave that idea for another day.
Heading home the skies seemed clear. As the persied meteors are active, once home we settled outside to watch. I'd hoped to be able to capture the Milky Way as well as meteors falling. I spotted two shooting stars and then watched as cloud drifted in to spoil the fun. It was almost 2am before we called an end to our really enjoyable night out.

August 13th & 14th
A couple of days being able to play around finding images to fit my photo challenge for this week; number 6-10 and extreme close ups. It was a glorious sunset at the end of Aug 13th and I was also able to play around creating bokeh effects with coastal lights. I realised when I was playing around that I was able to count a number of different colours and was delighted to see that I had my No. 7!
The next day I took my car in to have an small oil leak fixed and as there was about 2 hours to wait, decided to go head to a small park. Jack wanted to have a look at the ducks, however when we arrived there, they hadn't yet woken up. It wasn't a problem, there were other things to do such as climbing on the kiddie frames and the older people's exercise machines! I was also able to complete captures for the rest of the numbers 6, 7, 8 and 9! One part of the challenge done then!
I have just selected my five photos for the big critique coming up on Tuesday morning. I need to show improvement from my earlier submissions and am hoping that I am able to do so!
I have also been asked to provide twirl photos for a venture in the craft world. The idea is to use abstract designs on bags - we'll see where this one goes!

I'd heard of a local town which had found a unique and colourful way to provide shade; loads of umbrellas strung up. Deciding to go and have a look I found them and they were indeed, colourful. Unfortunately, there wasn't much more really that the place had going for it, however it made for some interesting photo opportunities.
I wanted to visit an area at the top end of the lake to see how much the water had receded. It was certainly an eye opener. There was no water running into the lake to replenish that which was being taken out. The effect was quite dramatic.
I had a good chat with one of my fellow photographers in our group and picked up, as well as able to give a few good tips to help us both on our quest for better images. He's seeking to bring to his images, some of the aspects I concentrate on and he has an eye for technical detail. He's just had a critique session with our group leader and I'm due one and we both agreed that although we still have a long way to go, this forum for learning is productive.

Then two became three again! It was off to the airport once more and the opportunity to see what images were to be captured. Nell as ever was excited as we walked into the airport; she generally only gets out of the car when I'm there to collect people.
I wandered around and could see people coming through arrivals and heading outside. It was dark inside whilst light and colourful outside. The contrast was striking. I also spotted a young girl sleeping beside a pillar on which was an interesting advert. I went closer and felt there was a story in the image - sweet dreams!
I'd wanted to concentrate on light on dark and dark on light images having learnt of a technique for determining the main subject matter on an image.

The day started early with a link up to my tutor in Australia for the critique of my photos. It started well with her being able to offer no suggestions as to how to improve my first two photos; one of the mountains and the other of duck. The third offering however, was more or less a failure! It was a B&W portrait and I was told the light was all wrong creating shadows where they weren't wanted and the eyes weren't visible. The next two, one of Nell, the other of the guitar hand were both passed with minor adjustments to cut out spots of light and with a crop to make Nell the focus of the image. I passed with flying colours and so now it's on to the next level and the need to produce another ten images of even higher quality taking into account suggestions made to date.
After that nerve jangling hour or so, it was a more relaxing rest of the day. After dark however, we decided to go out and capture some star trails and star photos. I needed to cast my mind back to settings I'd used before, which took a while. After taking a few test shots however, all seemed OK. After about 10 mins or so, the ISS made a scheduled appearance and I was delighted to see when I processed the images, that I had captured a fair bit of it's 1 minute flight.
Seeing the Milky Way beginning to appear, I captured a few images. It was still relatively early for a really clear display though, added to which, there are holidaymakers out on the mountain now who insist on having outside lights on polluting an otherwise dark sky. I was able to get enough of a shot to encourage me to go out again soon in the early hours.

An afternoon and evening at the dog beach. The sea was so calm; a surprise given windy conditions which prevailed during the morning. I really like the camaraderie there is on the dog beach, particularly the lack of screaming kids too! The interaction between the dogs is funny to watch. Big dogs and small dogs alike just do their own thing and seemingly have a ball. It also makes for some great action photos. After leaving the beach, we headed to the port to see what images might be available after sunset.
I've received my next photo challenges - numbers 11 - 15 and also a wide angle shot of an animal or person, close in to create distortion. Should be fun!
An afternoon and evening at the dog beach. The sea was so calm; a surprise given windy conditions which prevailed during the morning. I really like the camaraderie there is on the dog beach, particularly the lack of screaming kids too! The interaction between the dogs is funny to watch. August 20th
A relaxed day with things getting done, however with no sense of urgency! My new rucksack in which I can carry all my personal gear when I go to America, arrived in the morning. I had some fun deciding what was going to go where. I then spent some time trying to think about numbers and how to represent them in an image. I remembered some coloured pens I had and when I found them, I was delighted to see that there were eleven, rather than ten for some reason!
I also came across the 13th of 14 Buddhist Commandments and it fitted in with a photo I had taken of a bridge across a ravine. Playing around with the words and a background, I eventually finished with my Number 13 for the challenge.

An early morning start to get to the stables for a ride. We were greeted by a pack of dogs of varying sizes which were intimidating for Nell and me both! The owner was already getting the horses ready so I headed up the mountain to position myself for some photos when they passed. It seemed no time at all before they were coming up the track towards me. Three of the dogs accompanied the riders and Nell wasn't at all sure when they placed themselves in front of where we were waiting. The horses passed by and all was quiet. Jack was on a leader and had a huge grin on his face. I watched them disappear into the distance and enjoyed some time just sitting and looking to see where I could capture some images on their way back. I wanted to take some photos into the rising sun, however the bends on the mountain were going the wrong way. I concentrated instead on capturing some images of the hooves lifting dust. Can't make up my mind if they worked or not. Still, I get another chance next Friday as a longer trek is happening.
I played around trying to get the head of one of the horses in a wide angle shot. It meant getting as close as I could to create the distortion I was after. It was funny looking through the view finder and seeing this huge nose coming towards me. I was well pleased with the image I captured.
After we were all done at the stables we headed to the river. I had my globe and there was a photo I wanted a go at creating for the next 10 image submission for my photo course.
Then it was down to the village for a meal to finish off an enjoyable and productive day.

August 22nd
A full day starting off with taking down the awning due to high winds forecast. That job done we were off to the lake. It was windy, however not too windy for the kayaks to go out. Ju and Jack decided to go out together and headed upwind so they could drift back if it increased.
After a short stop for replenishing a few things in the pantry, it was on to the coast and the favourite pizza place of Jack. We looked for a parking place near to the front, however it was impossible. We made our way instead, to where I was confident of finding a space. It meant a walk to get to the pizza place and on the way I was able to see that a Number 15 for my photo challenge would be possible as houses were numbered.
Feeling full, we headed to the go-kart track. After a long wait the competitors were in! I tried some different camera settings for a change and had the ISO on automatic. It worked really well with some test shots. As time wore on however and others who were there first took to the track, I had to adjust the settings manually again as it was so dark.

It was off to the mountains to tackle the hanging bridges again. The wind was strong en route and was buffeting the car quite strongly. I wondered how it might be on the bridges in strong winds, however I needn't have worried; all was calm!
We took the usual route of climbing up high first, to enable a more gentle return later. I stopped to take some photos through an old, dead branch I'd used earlier in the year. This time I made the branch act as a frame for a portrait image which I hoped I'd be able to use in my next level photography course. This particular level requires evidence of how techniques learnt can now be applied to images captured in the early days of the course. What I found however, was that my new found knowledge rejected the image; it just didn't work!
Having been through the tunnels and bum-shuffled along narrow ledges we once again found ourselves back at the longest bridge. There was a maintenance man directing an ever growing number of people on the bridge (thank goodness we had arrived early!). I asked him if there was any way I'd be able to get down to the waterfalls alongside the bridge and was surprised when he nodded and then showed me the way! It was magic to be below the falls and the water wasn't too deep; cold, however not deep! I will definitely return to this area after we've had rain this winter.

Another opportunity to see if I could capture some sharper images of a flamenco dancer. It didn't work, well at least not in the way I had hoped. The lighting at the venue is dire and of course, the dancer was moving continually. However, the performance was superb and well worth watching again. I played around in Photoshop to see what I might be able to do with some images. I'm not entirely sure how I arrived where I did, however I am well pleased with the result. It meant that I had my tenth and final image to submit for my next level in the photography group.
Apart from the dancing, it was also a chance to catch up with friends who came down to the coast. We both were able to watch the dancing at close hand as we'd been allocated table right at the front.
I'm anticipating that one of the next photo challenges will be to find images representing numbers 16-20. I was able to find number 20 whilst having a drink before moving to our table for the dancing; the sunshade had 20 stays to hold the umbrella shape!

August 27th - 28th
Days filled to the brim! A trip to underground caves, riding and a final visit to the dog beach were crammed into the last few days of the summer holiday.
The caves were something I'd not bothered with before, however the opportunity appeared and I was happy to have taken it. I was impressed by the vastness of the complex with an enormous amount of stalagtites and stalagmites and thankfully, the place wasn't too full so we were able to wander and take photos. Mind you, after a while I began to realise that although spectacular, there was a sameness about it all. Nonetheless, I clicked away, not really knowing what I was after as what I was confronted with, had been unexpected.
A wander around the town was a much better experience than earlier in the summer as the crowds seemed to have eased somewhat. Nerja is just not one of those places which appeals though and it shows in the images I capture!
The penultimate day of the family summer dawned bright and early with another horse ride in the mountains. Jack had wanted a longer trek and so a 2 hour ride had been booked. I went ahead and walked well into the mountains along the route the horses would take. It gave me time to try to suss out a place to wait for them passing.
Later, at the dog beach I was able to capture some images of a young girl playing with a beach umbrella and play with it to create a submission for one of this week's photo challenges. It involves cropping a photo in an unconventional way! I wasn't sure that I had achieved much which was unconventional, however I did have an image from the flamenco dancing the other night which I decided to use as well.

August 29th - 30th
The month comes to a close as does a hectic and thoroughly enjoyable summer with family. The pace of life becomes more leisurely for a while and as cooler air begins to arrive, the thought of getting out walking was appealing.
It was just light when I left home with Nell. It was fresh and the air damp, however it was great for walking. Nell renewed all her spots to leave evidence of her visit and we were treated to some lovely views as we reached the top of the mountain. Mist hung throughout the valleys and the sun was beginning to emerge from behind a cloud. It created some lovely rays spreading high into the sky. I played around with camera movement ; it was great just to get lost in my photography again.
Returning home I started to get the house sorted and then settled down to sort out my submissions for this week's photograpy challenge.

August 31st
I felt like really stretching my legs this morning and headed off to complete my 5km walk at first light. The light was basically grey; a fug seemed to hang over everything. I didn't anticipate any photo opportunities as there was little contrast, however it didn't stop me looking. I was in for a surprise as I headed back home. The sun had risen and was beginning to lighten the murk. Then I saw that because of the murkiness, the complete circle of the sun could be seen. I took some photos hoping that my settings would bring out the clarity of the sun. As I walked and the sun rose, I continued to take photos from different angles until the brightness started to become too much. It was magical for sure and almost looks like some images I've seen photoshopped.
I arrived home feeling pleased with having completed my walk with Nell and also for having seen such a phenomena.
