October 2014
Day 275 - 1st October, 2014
My week in the UK is over and the journey home was to begin. However, it didn't start before I managed to follow up on one of the ideas I had at the start of the week.
Across the road from where we stayed was a small English church. I was told where the key was and so this morning, I searched it out and entered. The church is still used, however there's only one service a month. It had the air of abandonment and a musty smell. It did give me though, a chance to wander around with freedom and have a look to see what might be the best places to capture images.
The key to open the door was huge and heavy. Who might answer when the heaver knocker is used is anyone's guess. The two together though, provided a photo opportunity.
Then it was off for a final breakfast. Normally I can't stomach an English breakfast first thing in the morning. Today I was able to fill up as we left our trip to the cafe until late. I didn't think I'd want to eat anything more for several days after that lot.
A bus trip, then a plane trip and by the early hours of tomorrow morning our feet will be on Spanish soil once again.
The photo I have chosen for today is one of the keys and knocker of the church. I have also decided to take photos of hands whenever I can, they have a character all of their own. This photo fitted the bill in this respect and is also the type of image which I have learnt to seek out.

Day 276 - 2nd October, 2014
Back on the mountain again and it was definitely a contrast to walk to the top compared to the last week walking on the flat lands of Norfolk. Nell was full of herself and running backwards and forwards to check on me! I had such a warm welcome from her on my arrival back home.
There was mist in the valleys and the mountains were more or less obscured by cloud. Such fantastic views which made me want to breathe deeply and suck it all in. I love going back to the UK for visits, however I love coming back home even more.
Recent rain had refreshed everything; variations in greens rather than browns are appearing. I took some landscape photos including the mountains in the mist as well as the emerging greenery. I also took some close ups of new vegetation appearing, such as acorns. My photo for today however, is of a snake which had obviously had a rude awakening early in the morning. He may have been awoken as I passed, however he was sufficiently with it to pose in a stance to strike if need be. It gave me the opportunity to capture an image though before it slid away. It's not often I get up close and personal with a snake so I am chuffed to have a record of this event!

Day 277 - 3rd October, 2014
No too much time today inbetween working and socialising to seek out suitable subjects to photograph.
I was down in the village this afternoon, however the light was too bright on the white buildings to make a meaningful photo worthwhile. I wondered about leaving it until the sun set, however I have some really spectacular images already and was looking for something I hadn't captured before.
Walking through the vineyard I thought I spotted a small ball of Nells. However when I went to pick it up I realised that it was a puff ball fungi. I had a go at photographing it from various angles, however hard I tried though, it still looked like a white ball on stoney ground; not very interesting!
As I tried various angles to capture the fungi, a splash of colour caught my eye. It was a bunch of grapes which had dried into raisins. Together with some surrounding leaves turning yellow, the scene was colourful. This is the image I have for today. Not only do I like the colours, I like the textures within the image and the detail which is present in the raisins.

Day 278 - 4th October, 2014
Having awoken in the early hours and been unable to get back to sleep, I made myself a cuppa and went outside. The stars were brilliant in the inky black sky and having decided that I would resist temptation and fetch my camera, I sat and looked. I could see so many constellations although the Milky Way wasn't prominent. It wasn't cold although the air was fresh. It magical sitting there enjoying such a display, knowing that nearly everyone else around was fast asleep and missing out.
Later I set off for a walk and just down the hill came upon a scene of disaster. A local dog, which had survived many years living at a nearby cortijo was laying in the centre of the road with a thick trail of blood leading from the underside of his head. The property above where foreigners were staying with their young boxer pup, whilst obviously still occupied, looked as if it had been exited quickly. What had happened I wasn't sure, however I decided there was nothing I could do for the dog and didn't want Nell investigating and maybe contaminated with something, so I left with a really sick feeling in my stomach. So many other dogs had just come and gone at this cortijo and it seemed such a sad end for one which had endured so much.
Walking on somewhat subdued, I wondered what I would find to photograph. There had been a dew so drops of water reflected the sun's rays. I wondered if I might find a spider's web which was sparkling with the dew and failing that, to be able to capture a bokeh affect with an image. In the event, there were no spider's webs to be seen and getting a bokeh effect wasn't easy and needed me to lay full length on the ground. I spent ages with my macro lenses trying to create the effect I was after when I focussed in on a water droplet. This is the image I have chosen for today's photograph. It is of a blade of grass on which was a drop of dew. I really like the angle of the shot as my camera was sitting on the ground tilted slightly upwards, thereby catching a glimpse of the blue sky. I must be similar to an ant's view of the world.

Day 279 - 5th October, 2014
The sky at night is so beautiful at the moment. I was outside again with my cup of tea before dawn, drinking in the vista. The clear air makes it possible to see thousands of stars twinkling in the sky. This morning I couldn't resist temptation and quickly set up my camera and tripod to try to capture some of this glory.
Brian and Tipsy came over later in the day and we went for a wander to the top of the mountain. Half way up we met with the resident wolf, albeit behind his fencing. Tipsy was beside herself with joy. At last a soul mate who wanted to play as much as she did. Nell just sat and watched in a bored manner. Onwards and upwards we went, until finally at the top we could sit down. To our delight there were numerous different species of butterfly flitting around and we spent some time homing in on their preferred landing spots to capture some images.
The day was perfect for landscape photography; clear and with fluffy cumulous clouds building up over the mountain range, We stayed there for quite a while before making our way back down again and meeting up with the wolf at a different part of the fence. It made for better photo opportunities as the mesh was wider and Tipsy and the wolf were able to not only touch with noses, at one time they were even licking each others faces.
The photo I have chosen for today is one of the swallow tail butterflies from on the top of the mountain. There is something special about seeing this particular butterfly because only last week when I was in the UK, I was talking with a warden from the Broads Authority about the fact that the English equivalent is only found at that location. The European version is more prolific, however it is still a pleasure to see.

Day 280 - 6th October, 2014
The best laid plans................! I thought that with the night sky so clear at the moment, it might be a good opportunity to get up in the early hours and take some photos of the Milky Way. What I hadn't taken into account however, was the phase of the moon. Rising sometime after 2am I realised things didn't look too hopeful when outside was bathed in bright light! The moon was not only near to full, there was also a haze which had the effect of dispersing the light even further.
Not wanting the effort of rising early to be wasted and looking around, a photo opportunity presented itself. The moon was reflected in the water of the pool and the haze provided a cover over the lights on the coast.
Without bothering to go back indoors for my tripod, I adjusted the settings to enable a hand held capture. It worked because of the brightness of the moon although it would have been sharper and with less noise with the tripod. At that time of the morning however, perfection was not really on my mind!
I've chosen the image taken at night for today's photograph, mainly because I need to carry out some clean up work on my computer. It could be a long job and not allow time for more photo opportunities during the day.

Day 281 - 7th October, 2014
It was with some trepidation that I turned on my lap top first thing this morning; I had to deal with the Blue Screen of Death the last time I attempted a clean up! This morning however, all was well and with over three quarters of my hard drive now available to use once again, processing is much faster too.
Deciding to go for a long walk, I set off just after daybreak and headed down the mountain. There was now no evidence on the road of the disaster which befell the dog a few days earlier.
As it was early I felt confident enough to run the gauntlet of a pack of dogs which lived further down the mountain and so set off in that direction. It was a lovely walk; everywhere was quiet and still, not even a dog could be heard barking! Eventually I turned back inland and after a while could see the sun beginning to rise right over Frigiliana. I also realised that the rising sun is showing itself earlier as it comes up behind lower mountains in the range. A few more weeks and I shall be able to see it on the horizon when hopefully, some spectacular images and reflections over the sea will occur.
Back home later on, my day was spent inspecting and improving every inch of the hen run. I am picking up another cockerel and two hens tonight and I want all my fowl to be safe. I found a weak spot bordering an adjoining abandoned property which is ideal territory in which a fox could hide. I shall be pouring cement along that boundary over the next few days and only when I am confident of the reinforced area, will I let them out to scrat.
Whilst looking for photo opportunities this morning, I somehow seemed to find myself in an HDR mode! The photo I have chosen for today is one in which the subject lent itself to that process. I have no idea of the purpose of this piece of machinery, however I like the colours and effect I have been able to achieve; it was a useful processing exercise.

Day 282 - 8th October, 2014
Today was the day I was able to capture an image I'd had at the back of my mind for ages, should the opportunity arise. I didn't go looking for it specifically, in fact the photo shoot was really about water and reflections. I met with Brian and Tipsy and together with my brother we headed to the source of water for a local reservoir. The thought was that recent rainfall may have swollen the feeding river creating different photo opportunities.
Water levels were low and the feed was simply a trickle so I walked along the meandering stream towards the reservoir looking for reflections. Spotting some old fencing I crossed the river and headed towards it thinking of an interesting foreground for an image. I was looking to see where I placed my feet as there were patches of really sticky, soft mud and realised that I was walking on a huge area of dried, cracked ground; just the sort of conditions I hoped to find one day after seeing an image I liked containing this element.
I was able to capture several images and have chosen one for my photo today. I just really love the effect of the cracks in the foreground even more now that it is part of my image. The landscape in which I was able to find this scene is spectacular too, adding to this image I am proud of.
Notwithstanding the fact that it took us 3 hours to find somewhere to get a meal, the day was a success because of this image.

Day 283 - 9th October, 2014
An early start to get to the street market in a nearby coastal town, before the hoards arrived. There was car parking space and I was soon in and out having purchased the goods I was after and having taken some photographs of the colourful fresh fruits on display. A little while longer and it would have been virtually impossible to actually see anything other than people.
Next stop was at a DIY store on the outskirts of Malaga and on the return journey, much to Nells' delight it was a walk along the dog beach. This time though, I didn't stop on the sand. The sea was a beautiful colour and the wind was creating waves with lovely white foam so I clambered over loads of rocks to get some closer images. Dodging the spray as it hit the rocks, Nell and I eventually made it to an area which presented some lovely photo opportunities.
The image I've selected is one on which I have used a painting program to process. The original image was in itself OK, however this treatment has brought out the vivid contrast and colourings I saw on the beach today and for me, has enhanced the image.

Day 284 - 10th October, 2014
Knowing I had a heavy workload today I decided to get to the top of the mountain for sunrise. As Nell and I were leaving, a Spanish voice addressed me in the half light; it was my friend Rafael, out early collecting almonds! Stopping to speak to him meant that it was more of a sprint to the top to ensure I didn't miss the sun rising. Nell and I made it in time and as the sun hadn't yet actually shown itself, we were able to sit and watch the spectacle unfold. The colours were glorious and when the sun did appear they stayed around for a short while.
Heading back down the mountain I helped with the almond picking for a while. I took some photos as well, thinking in terms of the theme of "man at work"!
Continuing with my own work cementing a little later, I learnt that my water tank was leaking! This tank happens to be way down the hill. I headed down loaded with all that I could think of that I might need. It was a washer, easy to sort if I had been nearer the house.
Eventually having dealt with it, I was able to get back to the main work of cementing! Not much energy was left by mid afternoon, however I had achieved and even had a spectacular photo taken just before the sun rose this morning. I chose this capture because of the lovely colours which reflected in the sea as well as showing the exent of the illumination of the sky.

Day 285 - 11th October, 2014
I knew with the fantastic cloud formations of this morning that I would have no trouble capturing a worthwhile landscape image. That fact alone was enough for me to decide to look for detail, otherwise there would be little challenge.
Not at all sure what might present itself, I started off on my walk. I saw new vegetation emerging which stood out against the sky. There was also beauty still in dried vegetation. I took photos of both as well as backlit leaves and shadows.
Coming down a track, I could see that the wolf was out so Nell and I made our way towards it. I don't suppose it gets much interaction with either humans or other animals and it was certainly excited to see us both. I tried to take photos as Brian did the other day by simply aiming the lens in the direction of the wolf, through the fence. I also tried to capture its face as it stood up against the fence. I have a feeling that the fence will need to be reinforced before too long if the wolf is not to get out. It was pushing madly against the wire and its head now comes through much further than it did the other day.
Making my way slowly home, I knew I was putting off the job I needed to get done today - cleaning out the hen house! Eventually there was nothing for it; I couldn't delay any longer. All the cobwebs have now gone, however they will no doubt return before too long. The floor is clean and the hens and cockerel seem happy. Perhaps there's an image to be captured there. Not today though, I'd had enough by the time I'd finished!
The photo I have selected is one I took as I sat with Nell. The image I originally took included her red tongue and it was that contrast which inititally attracted me. Processing it however, I decided to crop out the tongue as the detail in her nose and surrounding hair is enough on its own.

Day 286 - 12th October, 2014
Thunder and lightening during the night and much needed rain, I thought that there may be a chance to get out and have a wander to see what images I might find during the morning. However, the best I could manage was a brief foray into the vineyard to capture some images of the next batch of rain heading my way, as the sun was rising.
I was facing westwards so the redish colours in the clouds were reflected. Behind me however, there was another scene unfolding as the sun rose and colours in the east turned orangey yellow. I nipped through the fence and on up the hill a little. The colours and light were awesome. I waited until the direct light from the sun lit up the tips of trees and before the reflected redish colours faded and took some photos.
It is one of these images I have chosen for today. Mother nature can certainly put on a spectacle and for me this particular image reflects the amazing effect of the light and the approaching storm I experienced this morning.

Day 287 - 13th October, 2014
Although I try not to choose the same subject more than once in any given month, this month I am making an exception. I am so chuffed to have been able to capture the action shot of the swallowtail butterfly, seen alongside, just as it was landing. I also love the detail, especially the eyes, which Brian told me were an important element when photographing wildlife. Not for one minute when I left home for a wander, did I imagine I'd be even have the chance to see, let alone photograph butterflies. The air had a nip first thing and as such, not conducive to butterfly spotting. I decided to take a route I hadn't followed since the beginning of summer, thinking that the cold would mean no snakes. Vegetation had started to regrow, especially the gorse which made progress somewhat unpleasant at times. Nonetheless, it was good to have a real workout with a steep climb included and eventually we made the top of the mountain and sat to recover!
It was here that the butterfly display started. What a treat and yet another opportunity for me to hone my photographic skills by putting into practice that which has been explained to me. I hope it bodes well for the quality of image I hope to capture in the next few days. I will be with friends in the very north of Andalucia in the Sierras de Cazorla where we hope to be able to see some deer in all their glory during the rutting season.
Day 288 - 14th October, 2014
A long journey brought us from home to Las Sierras de Cazorla. Storms were forecast for the day and we certainly had some heavy rain. However, what these conditions also brought were spectacular cloud formations. Stopping frequently to stretch legs and enjoy hot drinks as temperatures started to drop, we eventually arrived at the main mountain town of Cazorla in the province of Jaen in northern Andalucia.
Our Spanish companions wanted us to sample the food typical of the area. We made our way to a restaurant in the central plaza. It wasn't raining when we arrived and the owner happily wiped down some chairs and a table so we could sit outside. There were a few stares from locals, no doubt putting our extravagant behaviour down to the fact that some of us were foreigners. We even had an umbrella put up and just after we ordered, so the rain started to come down.
Unperturbed, we continued drinking and eating until we were well and truly stuffed!
Eventually continuing to a nearby location, we were disappointed not to be able to access a castle way up high and perched on an impressive tower of bedrock. We were able to find a location further on to view the spectacle. Today's image encompasses all the elements represented in this beautiful part of Spain. Dramatic scenery, threatening rain clouds, green vegetation and mystical atmosphere.
The final experience of the day was as darkness fell, we went outside to hear stags bellowing to claim their territory.

Day 289 - 15th October, 2014
An early start to get to a river before sunrise was rewarded by views of deer in the gloom moving along the river. We were also surprised by a squirrel which suddenly decided to put on a swing and jumping display.
Making our way to a waterfall we discovered earlier in the year we were delighted to find that the flow was much greater and some great images were possible.
A trip back to the apartment meant breakfast before we set out to find a roosting area of vultures high in the mountains. It was an amazing experience to be so high up and looking down on the nests of the vultures on a rock face opposite and then to be able to captures images of the birds as they left their nests and flew below us before rising high above us.
The only blot on the day was a noise which started on the way to see the source of the River Gaudalquivir. It sounded like a stone on the brake disk and although it stopped after movement backwards and forwards, I don't think it is completely right. Tomorrow I will have another look at the problem and decide if I need to get it seen to before the journey home.

Day 290 - 16th October, 2014
We thought that we were going to be disappointed and not be able to see any deer during the rutting season. When Arthur, Brian, Lourdes, Antonio and me arrived at the area we anticipated being able to see some deer, there wasn't one in sight. We first of all though waited to see if we could capture colours and light across the water of a reservoir. There was low cloud and mist which made the scene atmospheric, however it started to become a race to see whether the sun's rays would arrive before the cloud disipated. Deciding to move upwards towards a look out point we suddenly heard and saw some deer. A quick scramble down the bank for all of us ensued; all at different points. We stayed watching and taking photos for ages and eventually emerged from our various looking points with stiff and aching joints. It had all be worthwhile however, we had seen and recorded an amazing experience. Although we continued travelling to other places, my photo of today has to be one of the deer; it was the reason for making the journey at this time of the year.

Day 291 - 17th October, 2014
The morning couldn't have been better, both for walking and also photography. There was an early morning mist which was added to as the sun rose. The photograph opportunities were aplenty and we all took advantage. We had an objective although it entailed a hike. We all hoped to be able to achieve, however it was by no means a certainty as we set off.
The mist, combined with the river and fantastic scenery, made for lovely images and it was difficult to remember sometimes, that we needed to move on if we were to reach the walkway area above the river, which was our objective.
Antonio as ever, was able to spot distant animals and pointed them out to us. One in particular stood high on a rocky outcrop silhouetted against the rising sun; it made for an impressive image.
Eventually reaching the walkway, we were all relieved to have actually arrived. The light was changing all the while and the walkway itself and its reflections in the river is the image that I decided to select for today. It reflects the beauty of the area as well including the walkway which was our destination.
In the evening, our objective was to see as many animals possible making their way towards the river at dusk. We set off to be in a reasonable position before the hopeful migration took place. It wasn't until we had given up and on the way back to the apartment however, that we saw deer. We'd obviously chosen the wrong place to sit and watch as they were on the way back up to higher ground. We weren't too disappointed though; tomorrow we're on our way home after 5 amazing days in this beautiful part of Andalucia.

Day 292 - 18th October, 2014
Our time in the Sierras de Cazzorla was at an end, for now! Already plans were being made for a return in the future however; it really is a beautiful part of the world, let alone Spain.
Packing up didn't take long although before we left I had time to go outside and watch the changing colours in the sky as the sun started to rise behind the mountains. There was also mist in the valleys which seems to be normal in this area at this time of the year and has lent itself to some lovely images.
On the road and heading back home we only made a few stops for bread, petrol and to eat. Near to home we stopped for our last meal together as a group on this trip before all going our separate ways. There are so many memories captured in the photos of this adventure, selecting one a day could never do the experience justice. However, for the purpose of this blog, the photo I took early on is appropriate and also a lovely scene with the steadily changing autumnal colours showing. We were on this road a short while later heading away from our latest adventure.

Day 293 - 19th October, 2014
Half an hour into what I'd anticipated would be, a long leisurely walk with Nell, I heard the first gun shots. I'd completely forgotten that it was Sunday and we were now in the 3 month shooting season. Thankfully it only goes on until December 31st, however as the shooters have a reputation for shooting at anything that moves, I normally try to walk in bright clothes and around the time most of them will break for food between 2 and 3pm. I was definitely in the wrong place at the wrong time this morning! Nell had to walk beside me on the leader and as I concentrated on heading back towards civilisation where the shooters are less likely to be, thoughts of possible photo opportunities were the last thing on my mind!
On my return home, I decided to have a look at an image I'd taken earlier on before daylight. I'd made a cup of tea and looked outside. I couldn't make out if there were stars visible so stepped outside; it was so warm and still and I caught a glimpse of the new moon through the trees. I thought it was worth a photo so collected my camera and tripod and set them up. I was delighted with the image I'd captured and have happily chosen it for my photo for today. I love the mood it creates and am also chuffed that I was able to capture the crescent moon as well as the outline of the trees.

Day 294 - 20th October, 2014
Today I was able to have my long leisurely walk with Nell. It was wonderful simply wandering and making a decision as to which way to go when I arrived at a junction. I sort of had in mind the image I hoped to capture today although of course, I was ever vigilant for the unexpected. Unfortunately, the unexpected was such a surprise that there was no time to take a photo! Nell and I were clambering down a bank when I saw her suddenly leap and two partridge flew up into the air with a rush. I felt sorry for them really. They'd been hunted all day the day before and were probably hoping for a respite. Mind you, the beautiful colours of their feathers as they flew away means that I shall definitely be out stalking them now to see if I can capture an image.
It is so warm still and although vegetation is starting to green up, compared to the north of the province, everywhere here is still very dry and brown looking. One of the trees which remains green all year round though is the Evergreen Oak and it was to this tree that I looked for my photo for today. These trees used to cover the mountainside here a few decades ago and pigs used to eat the abundant acorns from them giving their meat a flavour generally missing today (so I am told by Spanish friends). I particularly like this image; the light is good and the depth of field has created an almost 3D effect.

Day 295 - 21st October, 2014
The day started well. The problem with my car was easily resolved. It was a lock nut on the wheel which wasn't locked! A bit of Locktite was applied, the nut tightened and I was on the road again.
Having gone to the coast for the car repair I took advantage of the opportunity to go for a walk along the beach with Nell.
I took my 400mm lens with the intention of capturing some bird images. Sitting by the side of the river I saw some dragonflies. Capturing a photo of them in flight however, was an altogether different matter. Now I know where they are, I shall visit again and see if I am more successful. The photo which emerged as my choice for today was one of those opportunities which presented itself unexpectedly. One of the numerous gulls must've been preening itself as several feathers floated by at one time. They looked so delicate and their reflections completed the image for me.

Day 296 - 22nd October, 2014
I rather hoped that my photo for today would come to me rather than my having to wander and search out an image. It is still so warm that walking during the day isn't too appealing. After having accomplished quite a few administrative chores, I decided to sit under a tree in the garden and watch. A few birds and butterflies were flitting around and the bees were still working hard. The wind began to get up again and on a bend near to where I was sitting, I saw whirlwinds form and dance around.
It was so quiet and peaceful and I wondered if there may be an image to convey such a feeling of tranquility.
It wasn't until the evening however, that I found that for which I had hoped. The sunset wasn't particularly spectacular in terms of colour. I saw different textures and shades though, especially when I turned the image into black and white. It just seems to sum up the day for me somehow; a dreamy quality with a feeling of peacefulness and a blending of earth and sky in a gentle way.

Day 297 - 23rd October, 2014
I actually knew the image I wanted to capture for today's photo. I'd been looking at textures recently and had seen something I wanted to have a look at further. Knowing I couldn't tarry too long as there was a pile of things needing attention at home, I made haste on my way to the top of the mountain. Sitting down to enjoy the fresh breeze before heading downwards to capture the image I had in mind, I caught a movement in the corner of my eye. With a reflex movement I aimed my camera and clicked the shutter. Right in front of me a Sparrowhawk had taken off out of a tree. It was an amazing experience to be so close to it. I took a series of photos as it moved away and circled. On downloading my images later, I was absolutely delighted to see that I had managed to capture an image of the bird as it swooped past me. Not the best image technically, however it is clear enough to see the wings and head in take off stance as well as it's markings.

Day 298 - 24th October, 2014
Well I can't believe what I have managed to achieve today! Having seen dragonflies on a stretch of freshwater the other day, I determined to return as soon as possible to see if I could capture an image. Today it was possible. As Nell and I sat ourselves quietly down on the river bank, so a huge dragonfly came and seemed to inspect us before flying away. It boded well, I thought! I saw several others flitting about and tried, without success to focus in on them. Then I realised I could locate them more easily by watching the water for reflections before looking up for the dragonfly itself.
I was enjoying the challenge. It was quiet and peaceful sitting in the sun and listening to all the bird noises around me. There were plenty of different species around both on the water and flying close to where I was sitting.
Seeing a couple of dragonflies chasing each other, I set my focus to manual and tracked them, suddenly realising that one of them had come closer to me and was hovering just in front. I took several shots, having also altered my settings to ensure a fast shutter speed in the hope of being able to see the wings rather than simply a blur. The image looked sharp on my camera, so I was optimistic!
I wasn't done though! Another dragonfly came and settled in front of me, resting on a thin reed-like stem. I clicked away and thoughts turned to the possibility of a head-on shot of a dragonfly! I was on a roll!
Trouble is, the area is also popular with others as it is close to the beach. The hour of mass invasion of the human species had arrived. It was time to go, however I will return another day and see if I can hone my skills even more. Today though, I am more than satisfied with the image of the dragonfly in flight. I have only cropped the image slightly; it was almost full frame and the detail is amazing.

Day 299 - 25th October, 2014
I'd seen an advert for a horse fair in a nearby town so Brian and I thought we'd go and have a look-see. There wasn't much going on when we arrived, even though the event was programmed to have started at least a half an hour before we arrived.
Wandering around we tried to get different angles both for photos of horses and people. There were plenty of opportunities, however there were also plenty of other people around, often getting in the way just as we were about to take a photo! Nevertheless we were reasonably pleased with some of the images we'd captured. I was happy to have caught one of the horses doing a very good Elvis impression! It's the photo I have chosen for today. I have other cute ones of kids in costumes, horses and carriages and plenty of adornments, however this image appeals because it is different.
Having decided not to wait until the equestrian events later in the day, we made our way to the beach, much to the delight of both dogs. Brian wanted to see if he could capture an image of a dragonfly, flying, so we went and sat and waited.
He wasn't particularly lucky. He managed to photograph some inflight, however from a distance. I made an attempt to see if I could capture a head on image of a dragonfly; after the success of yesterday, I wasn't really as enthusiastic as I might otherwise have been.

Day 300 - 26th October, 2014
The clocks went back an hour last night and then on my arrival in the UK, I had to put my watch back another hour. Talk about feeling in a time warp! It was really windy as we came into Newcastle over the sea. I looked down at a lighthouse on a promontory and thought about maybe a trip out there if the wind continued over the next few days. As it turned out however, I was able to experience the force of the wind at a monument we visited at the top of a hill. It was a relatively easy climb up to it, however once there, the gusts almost blew us off. The monument itself is simply something built in honour of someone - it never had any function at all other than to be impressive, which it certainly was.

Day 301 - 27th October, 2014
I recently read a quote from a fellow photographer friend to the effect that she was in competition with no-one and had no desire to play the game of being better than others. Her objective was to become better than she was yesterday. I so relate to such sentiments; I seek not to compete, rather to excel. As I enter into the last phase of this one year photo a day project, I have started to look back over my work since Jan 1st and am proud of my achievements on this journey thus far. My challenge is to myself and I am loving where it is taking me.
Today was an adventure by public transport! It initially went well, however in the end, we needed to be rescued by car! Sometimes it's not easy to get from A to B when either is a bit off the beaten track. Nonetheless, eventually arriving at the intended destination, we made the most of the photo opportunities. The river was in full flood and much wider than the last time I was there. It made for an interesting time, trying to negotiate the banks to get to where I wanted to capture an image! The trees alongside the river have just started to turn into autumn colours and to do the scene justice, I felt that a panorama was appropriate.
Day 301 - 28th October, 2014
I was awake early and realised I could get out into the countryside before sunrise. Hot-footing it to a location I'd come across earlier in the year, I was treated to an emerging spectacular. Definitely quite a few "wow" moments. Once the colour in the sky faded I made my way towards a wooded area where I could see the leaves had turned autumnal in colour. No-one else was about and as I trod very lightly alongside fallen leaves, I was able to see squirrels, magpies and even rats going about their business. I noticed that some magpies were using a tall tree as a look-out point and was thinking about having a go at capturing the birds in flight when a much heavier bird landed in the tree. Looking closer I could see it was an owl and raised my camera in hope of capturing an image. I wasn't successful, however there'll perhaps be other opportunities.
I wanted later to have a go at photographing long hair in motion and backlit by the sun. Unfortunately I was short of two elements, firstly the model (she was up late and then insisted her hair needed washing first) and secondly, the sun! Another opportunity will surely be available tomorrow!

Day 302 - 29th October, 2014
A frost was forecast so I set the alarm to make sure I could be out before sunrise at 7am and see what images I could capture. What I forgot to do however, was ensure that my alarm was set to local time. As such, I found myself up and ready to go out at 5am rather than 6am as I intended, wondering why it was still pitch black outside!
There was indeed a frost as forecast and as I walked passed cars I stopped to take some images of the patterns made on the bodywork. The sunrise was proving to be another spectacular and I concentrated on seeing if I was able to include the colours in the sky and the white of the frost in the fields. I was somewhat disappointed with the lack of effect of the frost, I obviously aspire more to the dramatic hoar frost than the more normal occurence!
The sun came out later on and I was able to have a go at capturing backlit hair. It was a lot of fun trying to time the hair flicking up into the air. One of the biggest problems was finding somewhere without a cluttered background. I could only achieve a declutter by increasing the amount of sky. At least the flicked hair and highlit ends are clearly visible. An interesting exercise and a lot harder than I anticipated.

Day 303 - 30th October, 2014
A trip into Durham today. Jack was in his element when a double decker bus arrived to pick us up so of course we went upstairs and enjoyed the journey from on high. It was really foggy first thing although it had begun to clear by the time we reached Durham. There was still mist around however and it provided a soft backdrop to our landscape photos. We decided to walk alongside the river; the autumn colours were spectacular, so rich and vibrant still. We hadn't long passed the local rowing club premises when I caught sight of a group returning. They added even more colour and interest to the scene.
Making our way into the centre of the city, we decided to climb to the top of the tower of Durham Cathedral. I always feel annoyed when entering this magnificent building. There are notices everywhere asking for donations and I have always made a point to the ushers, that I would happily contribute if I was able to take photographs inside. Imagine my surprise today, when approached and ready to be defensive about having my camera on display, I was advised that if I would like to pay £15 I could indeed now take photos inside the cathedral! OK, it's a lot of money, however the images available to capture are spectacular and I will definitely take advantage in the future when I have a tripod with me.
We wandered around the city for a while and were able to capture some great images as the light changed. The mist came down again late afternoon and we decided to call it a day and headed back to the bus station. Imagine the joy when we found our bus sitting there ready for us to board and yes, it was a double decker again!

Day 304 - 31st October, 2014
On the way home from a meal out last night, a detour was made into a cemetery to have a go at creating apparitions around a gravestone. It was a spooky experience for sure, however the experiment was reasonably successful and I managed to capture some images.
We were off to Newcastle today for a photoshoot both in the city and alongside the river at night. It was a long, late session! However the experience and the photo opportunities made it all worthwhile.
It is said that every good photo has taken a lot of hard work to capture. If you take into account the trials and tribulations getting about with public transport then I should have a set of master pieces on my hands!
There were several images I captured during the day which I really liked, however the objective in going to Newcastle was to capture images of the riverside at night and a night shot is what I have therefore chosen.
