Adventures of the three in 2015
June 15th -17th, 2015 - Stage 6, to avignon & spain
June 15th
Sur le Pont d'Avignon
L'on y danse, l'on y danse
Sur le Pont d'Avignon
L'on y danse tous en rond
None of us were sure what we'd find when we arrived in Avignon. We'd seen some photos of the town, however I'd chosen it as a stop off point mainly to give us a reasonably short journey back to my brother's home the following day. We also wanted to go somewhere different from the Camargue where we'd stayed on the outward journey.
The journey was easy and we arrived on the outskirts of the town early afternoon. As we drove in alongside the flowing Rhone River there were lots of delighted exclamations; it was beautiful! Eventually finding our way to the hotel (I had difficulty following the satnav and the one-way system at the same time!), we settled in and then went out to explore.
The town has lots of pedestrian-only streets within the old, walled area which made walking around very pleasant. We headed towards the famous bridge. Well famous for me and Lourdes knew the melody if not the same words that I knew. Jayne however, had never heard of the song. Unbelievable! I thought everyone knew it, apparently not! She was soon enlightened though and subjected to a rendition of the song when we were actually on the bridge!
We wandered the streets, as we were wont to do and eventually found our way back to the river where Jayne couldn't contain herself. She'd seen one of the river cruise boats run by Viking River Cruises as seen on tv! Looking inside we could see everyone dressed to the nines for their evening meal - each to their own I guess.
There was a fairground nearby and we sat by the river watching the wheel go round, however no-one was up for a ride on it. I contented myself with long eposures of it before we called it a night and headed back to the hotel.
We were very happy that a simple stop over had proved to be such a bonus. It really is a lovely place and had we realised, we may well have shoed in another day's stay. However, as it was, the next day we headed back into Spain and an overnight stay with my brother.
