December 2014
Day 335 - 1st December, 2014
The last leg, only this month to complete and this project will be finished. Then there will be time for reflection as to what I have achieved.
Today however, there was still work to do to find an image to capture which hopefully used some of the skills I have been honing throughout this year.
The morning was taken up with getting the site ready to rebuild the stone walls which have collapsed. I now have a huge pile of sand to play with as well as plenty of sacks of cement!
There was also time to play though. I left for the coast and managed to squeeze in a few visits to various merchants to buy and order materials I need to carry out repairs to earlier damage. Then it was on to the beach to see what changes had occured since the last time I was there. I met with Brian and Tipsy and we had a walk along to the area where river now meets sea. Sitting and watching all the gulls restlessly fly around, then settle only to rise again shortly afterwards, there were some good photo opportunties for action shots. Then a heron landed nearby. Our patience was rewarded when after a while, it suddenly took off and cameras clicked rapidly. I was pleased to have been able to focus in on the bird and track it as it flew away. It is the photograph I have chosen for today; I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't have been able to capture an image like this at the beginning of the year.

Day 336 - 2nd December, 2014
Not much time for taking photos today - I had a wall to rebuild! The work went well and as I sat with a coffee for a break, I tried to think about possible photo opportunities. My cat was sitting on a chair opposite and I thought she'd make a reasonable subject. What I might have thought counted for nothing as far as the cat was concerned! I sat on the floor and tried to get her to look at me. She completely blanked me!
By dint of patience however, I was eventually able to capture her face just as she looked away from the sun. It meant that her face was half in sun and half in shadow. I decided to emphasise this difference and have created an image in black and white which I'm pleased with. Bit Phantom of the Opera-ish!
I have a decision to make soon as to whether to buy Brian's more sophosticated Canon camera from him. He's decided to go for a Nikon and as his Canon has an LCD flip out screen I am sorely tempted. I'll see what I can make of it when I get a moment and then decide whether to upgrade or stick!

Day 337 - 3rd December, 2014
Balancing high up on a wall I was rebuilding, I wanted to keep an eye on the weather. Watching the small number of clouds lazily drifting by I noticed that they were moving at a similar angle to that of the branches of a garden tree. It gave me the idea to try to capture the movement of the cloud in a long exposure which would emphasise this direction.
Stopping for a coffee, I set up my camera on the tripod and added all my ND filters. I was eventually able to capture a 30 second exposure. which I have chosen as my photo for today.
Had the tree itself had a better form I would have included more of the branches. The image I have captured however, shows what I had seen and the long exposure has enabled the cloud movement to be extended along the line of movement.

Day 338 - 4th December, 2014
As I continued working on my walls, I let my thoughts wander to something I'd recently read. It was a reference to a method of photography called Miksang. I was first drawn to read about it as it is a Tibetan word meaning "good eye"; not in terms of composition, more the ability to see with a calm, uncluttered, open mind. When practised it leads to clearer vision; the eye becomes more focused and precise meaning the photographer is better able to perceive things of interest.
I understood the concept and related to it. I know that I can be single minded and get completely lost in the act of finding and creating an image to photograph. I am also open to photograph opportunties of all kinds. Reading something specific in this respect to which I could relate however, has made me even more aware that this hobby of mine had an effect on my life in many different respects.
My photograph of today is an example of how my vision is expanding; I would never have even thought of such an image a year ago. I was looking for items to photograph in the kitchen, thinking maybe of utensils and their shadows. Lifting out the grater from a cupboard, the large holes caught the light and created a strange effect; almost 3D. I decided to fetch my camera and see what image I could capture. It was really interesting to see what the light did to the patterns when angles were changed. I chose this image because it's possible to see the other side of the grater through the holes which adds another area of interest. The holes also have the aspect of vertical columns. It makes a change from landscape images, that's for sure!

Day 339 - 5th December, 2014
A day off today and Nell and I made the most of it! It was such a pleasure to walk along the flat rather than up and down sets of ladders; Nell and I just kept walking! It was a beautiful day, clear and bright. There were plenty of huge puddles around which gave some good reflections. I played around with depth of field using palm trees and their reflections to convey distance and was pleased with what emerged. A plane flew extremely low with a trail of smoke after it. I took some photos and then watched as it travelled northwards hugging the coastline, still streaming smoke. Later, I magnified the image and it was possible to see someone in the cockpit as it had been so low. It was a cargo plane as there weren't any windows in the side of the body.
On my way back to my car, I caught sight of movement causing a few birds to scatter. They then regrouped and curious, I decided to move slowly in to see what was happening. It turned out to be a cat which was stalking the birds and then jumping at them. I just sat and watched for a while with Nell quietly sitting beside me, also fascinated by what she was seeing. I used the opportunity to see what I could capture and the my photo of today shows one of the leaps the cat made. The doves obviously didn't feel too threatened as they allowed the cat to get in quite close before they took off.
Heading back home up the mountain, I stopped off and spent some time with a Spanish friend. A great way to end a really enjoyable day off!

Day 340 - 6th December, 2014
An early start to the day. Early enough to see the moon heading towards the horizon in all its glory! I fetched my tripod and mounted my camera ready to take a photograph as the moon was sinking fast. It was a bit nippy outside, however I didn't have time to put on more clothes. Shivering a bit in my night shirt, I was still able to concentrate sufficiently to set the correct exposure (and yes, pun intended!)
I'd been reading an article about photographing the night sky including the moon and settings were discussed. I'd remembered that it was suggested the exposure should be set at F11, ISO 100 and shutter speed 1/125. I decided to try it out and was really pleased with the images I was able to capture. I have chosen the most detailed image for today's photo. I did take other photos which included some foreground interest, however the detail of the moon is diminished. I may have another try tomorrow morning as the moon will be setting slightly later and there will be more light; just a question of balancing the elements.

Day 341 - 7th December, 2014
It’s still a case of making walls whilst the sun shines; I’m on the last bit of reconstruction, however it is also the bit with the most soil above. If it rains before the wall is up, the soil will come down. So, onwards and upwards is the way!
Not having much time to wander with my body of late, I have taken to doing more wandering with my mind. I’m exploring more the Miksang Photography concept. I am aware of how my approach to photography has changed over this year; it’s become more open and relaxed. I am also more aware from where the satisfaction in my own captures is increasingly derived.
At times, I have had in mind various images I’d like to capture, only to find that when I have succeeded, although the satisfaction was there, it was also as if something was missing. To stumble upon a photo opportunity and capture the moment has increasingly been from where my satisfaction has grown. It’s usually involved sitting quietly somewhere, feeling, relaxing and simply being in the moment. To be able to capture an image in those moments is so much more than a technical achievement.
My photo for today came about when I was sorting out some of my photographic bits and pieces. I opened a box and inside was a fan. Why it was there I have no idea. I opened it up and saw lines, shapes and colour, put it on a textured surface and started to take photos. After experimenting with different angles and focussing, I chose this particular image. I like the composition, the depth of field I’ve achieved and the shapes inherent in the image.

Day 342 - 8th December, 2014
I have been watching out for a lowering of temperatures this weekend. Colder weather had been forecast and living at over 2,200 feet of altitude, ice does appear briefly at times until the sun gets up.
From the warmth of the house it isn’t always possible to gauge what’s happening outside. It was still dark when I ventured out to investigate further.
It wasn’t cold and therefore the possibility of ice having formed on the pool water was zilch. What caught my eye however, was the beautiful reflections created in the moonlight. The air was crisp and the coastal lights twinkled as did the stars above, even with a moonlit sky. The sea was bathed in moonlight and adorned with scattered lights from fishing boats. There was so much of beauty in the scene I felt that somewhere there was an image to be captured.
As a gentle breeze caught the leaves of a palm tree, they started to rustle. I turned to look and saw my photo. Moonlight was shining on the fronds of the palm, creating a sparkle against the dark and starlit sky. It was absolutely magical and the resulting image I captured is my photo for today.
I so love living up here on the mountain, there's always a view and it changes with just a few steps. Working on the highest wall I am repairing, I have been able to get a bird's eye view of the coast and distant mountains. It's a view I shall never get tired of looking at.

Day 343 - 9th December, 2014
I could’ve done without nature’s choir singing extremely loudly at 4am, however, it least it gave me extra time to get some of the things done that I needed. It’s interesting that this winter so far, the wind has been coming from more northerly and easterly directions. Normally at the back of the house it is all quiet and calm even if there’s a hoolie blowing out front predominantly coming from the south and west.
Still no temperatures below zero, however I’d been toying with an idea to create a bokeh effect with the lights on the coast. I played around after dark last night with a glass and the coastal lights behind. I had put into the glass a nightlight to illuminate and give definition. I didn’t get to see if it might work as the wind kept blowing out the flame.
This morning though, I decided to have another go as the sun was coming up. I love what I was able to capture. The light was perfect. It showed off the shapes of the glass and not only captured an image of the bay in the bowl, it was also possible to see the image in the stem. I was able to introduce my own bokeh effect by using some bubble wrap. I am very happy to choose this image as my photo for today.

Day 344 - 10th December, 2014
I went for an early morning walk with Nell, the light was casting a lovely yellowish hue everywhere and as there was no-one about, it gave me time to have a look around to see what images there might be to capture.
I spotted several benches alongside the road and started to investigate what I could see looking along the slats of wood. The first benches I came across didn't really lead the eye to anything much, however as I walked further on up the hill, I could see that buildings in the town were beginning to come into view.
Bending down low to get the angle along the bench right, a bloke with his dog came into view. He must've caught sight of me and rather than investigate what I was up to, quickly past to the other side of the road and hurried on!
It wasn't a cold morning again and Nell and I continued our walk in a very pleasant temperature. I wonder if we'll be paying for this at a later stage? Well, maybe I'll be able to get some ice to play around with if we do!
It was haircut day for me today and a catch up with Susana. We usually put the world to rights in the hour or so I'm there and today was no exception. She's still waiting for me to give her the nod as far as a trip to the UK is concerned. I can imagine her fitting in very well with the rest of the "girls" and enjoying memorable experiences; we're all a bit mad!
Then it was back up the mountain. I wasn't going to mix cement, that'll start again tomorrow, however I did manage to (hopefully) waterproof the TT terrace. Another day or so and I'll be ready again for whatever nature decides to throw my way.

Day 345 - 11th December, 2014
A beautiful day again. I was mixing cement early on as it felt so mild and I thought it may get too hot for such manual work later on. As it was I paced myself well and really enjoyed the day. There really is something about being able to work in such amazing surroundings. I had my music playing and listening through earphones. Sometimes the feeling of well-being led me to burst into song. I wasn't particularly bothered about being overheard (I don't think my voice is that bad!) however as far as I was concerned, I was alone on the mountain anyway. Next door neighbours were due in later in the day.
I was singing along to a track and happened to look up! A Spanish friend was leaning over the fence with a huge grin on his face. Momentary embarrassment changed into laughter as I was applauded and told to continue! A lovely moment.
Taking a break to charge my solar lights, (I had it in mind to use them to photograph some light patterns when darkness came) I spotted water sparkling on Nell's frisby. The colours which came through the droplets in the sun, I thought made an attractive display as did the areas which I deliberately kept blurred. I took different images focussing on different parts of the frisby. I've chosen one for today's photo which includes the edge rather than just a flat surface and the top blurred area has a bokeh effect. The solar lights can wait until another day!

Day 346 - 12th December, 2014
The threat of a storm heading our way kept receding as the day progressed. It was due to arrive tonight and with varying degree of intensity hang around until Monday. The radar showed however, that it was breaking up and rain, if it actually arrives will now be here on Sunday. All of a sudden the urgency of finishing off jobs dissipated! It was warm outside so I sat in the sun on steps leading to the hen run and contemplated!
I'd been moving a pile of sand earlier on. My cement work is almost finished and I didn't want sand washing down the mountain in the rain. The spot I chose to store the sand had on it a type of mushroom; different from any I'd seen before. The surface seemed to be made up of blocks rather than the more typical smooth top. I took some photos with a view to identifying it if possible. The sun was creating shimmering sparkles on the lichen now spreading over the pool water. It made an interesting abstract image.
I sat on the steps with Nell beside me and spotted a small ball in the vineyard. I collected it and put it on top of a wall. I was idly looking at it and its shadow and let my focus blur and my thoughts wander. Bringing my eyes back into focus, I realised there was an image to be captured. The ball was a light green and the vegetation behind, a darker green. However, I like the simplicity of the black and white version and it is this image I have chosen for my photo of today,

Day 347 - 13th December, 2014
In my element first thing as I turned on my lap top and realised the cricket was on! What a treat to be able to stay in bed with a cuppa and watch the England team playing in Sri Lanka. I eventually decided I should get up and get on with the day.
Outside it was grey and overcast and rain was forecast. I decided that I'd spend time experimenting with some of the ideas for images I'd come across involving light.
I worked with candles, LED lights and water, creating reflections. I had sheets of colour for backing and learnt a lot about where to place lights and items. Often I thought I'd sorted all unwanted aspects, only to find when I looked at the image, there was a reflections or spot of light I'd missed. I tried to suspend a bottle in a pouring position as I wanted to use the blobs from the LED lights to give the impression they were emanating from the bottle. I had to give up on that aspect, however I did manage to arrange the LED lights in a way that they reached the glass.
There were a couple of images that I really liked, however for this blog I've decided to choose the one which has the most vibrant colours.

Day 348 - 14th December, 2014
I wanted to try out something with the LED lights I played with yesterday. I have coloured paper and I wanted to see what effect I could create by covering the lights. Rather than have static lights I had the idea to create movement and flow. To help in this quest I looked around and saw fruit on the sideboard. I thought the shape of a banana might help to produce nice lines, however it was with an apple that I was able to get more shape and flow.
I didn't have much time to explore more fully, different speeds of movement and their effect. Working with a bundle of lights as well meant I couldn't be as delicate or specific as I might otherwise have been. The result however, gave me plenty of food for thought and ideas as to utilising the technique in the future. On my shopping list now is the purchase of a pen light. I enjoyed messing around with lights and there are quite a few more images I want to try out.
I wanted to try out something with the LED lights I played with yesterday. I have coloured paper and I wanted to see what effect I could create by covering the lights. Day 349 - 15th December, 2014
I was off out early down to the coast to see what was needed to sort out the water pump. I couldn't park near to the shop I wanted so went a little further and used the car park of a garden supplier. I thought I'd better have a wander around before I left and was delighted to spot some strawberry plants for sale. I bought 20 as well as 5 cauliflower and 5 cabbage plants. It'll be an ideal time to plants them after recent rains and the prospect of sun and warmth for the foreseeable.
On to the plumbers supplies shop and I drew some curious glances as I walked in with a holdall hung over my shoulder which was obviously heavy. I proceeded to open it up and managed to lift it onto the counter and everyone just stopped to hear what I was going to say! Interest was soon lost though when I explained about a broken joint needing extraction!
I had an hour to hang around so went elsewhere to get the necessary fittings as well as calling in at a garden centre to get the one remaining plant I'd been after. As I was wandering I saw loads of lovely shaped leaves scattered on the ground. I picked up one and had an idea of the image I wanted to create. I sorted through my wood pile and found the log I wanted to use and set the leaf on top of it. I really like the contrasting colours and textures and have chosen it as my photo for today. I'm happy that it turned out just as I'd envisaged and without the need for any processing.

Day 350 - 16th December, 2014
There was snow on Maroma! I thought I saw it yesterday morning as it was getting light and rushed up the road with my camera and tripod. I set it all up and checked the focus and found out that it wasn't snow, it was cloud which was hugging the contours of the top of the mountain. This morning though, it was definitely snow! I took some photographs and headed back home, stopping near the entrance to capture the moon and some lovely cloud formations surrounding. When I checked the image later, because of the need for a long exposure, I saw that the trees blowing in the wind had created some lovely blurs and resulting textures. There was also a vivid sunrise and as the clouds were scudding across the sky, I tried some long exposure images to emphasise the colours and their movement.
I decided to chose a photo of the snow on Maroma in black and white for today. It's likely that it'll be gone tomorrow and as it's the first fall of this winter, I wanted to record it. The black and white image highlights the white of the snow and provides contrast in the early morning gloom.

Day 351 - 17th December, 2014
An outing with Sylvia and Chato. As ever, there was an "incident" and this time I had my camera ready to take some action shots! We had met up to decide whether to carry on with plans to revisit an area to see how things had changed since recent rain, as it was blowing a hoolie. After fortifying ourselves with cake and coffee however, we decided that we'd brave the elements anyway as the sun was out. Making our way into a forested area in the mountains, the air was clear and we could see things in great detail. Stopping off at an area where there are a series of basins into which water collects and runs, I was able to capture some lovely images of ripples on the water and reflections. It was relatively quiet and peaceful and we had a walk to see if the amount of water had resulted in a flowing river. It hadn't although it was possible to see that water had recently been running.
It was on the way back to get into the car that the mishap occurred. Chato travels in the boot of my car and Sylvia opened it up for him to jump into. She hadn't noticed that it had started to come down as Chato prepared to jump in and I stepped forward to catch it. Somehow, Sylvia became unbalanced and fell over, trying to grab me on the way and then not being able to stop herself from rolling down a hill. She cracked her head as she fell and will be a bit sore tomorrow, however no damage as such was done. With my camera to hand I couldn't resist taking a couple of shots. When Sylvia stood up, we carried on getting Chato into the boot. He took a run and jumped in but not far enough and his hind quarters started to slither out of the car with the front half following. We were almost hysterical with laughter at what had gone on and what we'd seen. There is never a dull moment when the two of us are together!
I was able to take some landscape photos of the area looking down to Lake Vinuela and up into the mountains. There was an amazing cloud formation which looked for all the world like a plume of smoke emanating from the top of one peak.
Dropping Sylvia and Chato back home later on I returned to my mountain. I was opening the gates when I looked down on to a nearby pool and saw interesting shadows on the cover. I decided to make my way down to it and capture the image. It is this photo I have chosen for today. I thought about uploading the cloud formation, however decided on the shadow because it is one of those images which I am able to see nowadays and I like the different formations of lines and reflections

Day 352 - 18th December, 2014
I hadn't intended to go for a walk first thing, however it was so mild I just couldn't resist. I was also, I'm sure, putting off the job which needed to get done today; mucking out the hens!
Knowing that the work would still await me when I returned, I set off and had a wander to the top of the mountain. It was good to walk although my leg muscles complained a bit. When I reached the top I lay on the ground enjoying the warmth and the moment and thought about possible photo opportunities. There were plenty on offer as it was clear across to the mountains and the sun had only just come up. I wasn't in the mood for landscape images though. There was no dew so bokeh on the grass wasn't on offer, however there was an abundance of small white flowers interspersed in the vegetation. I zoomed in to see what was on offer by way of images and immediately I knew I had found something I wanted to try and capture. One of the flowers was perfectly in focus whilst the others surrounding were blurred to a greater or lesser extent.
Alone in the crowd was my immediate thought as I focussed on the scene. I like the thought and the capture as well and is why I have chosen the image for my photo of today.

Day 353 - 19th December, 2014
Watching candles flicker last night, I was reflecting on the peacefulness they projected. No draught to disturb the flame meant it could reach upwards and provide more ambiente light as well. I started to think about photographing how to express what it was I thinking about. There was a warmth projected by the candle light although I wasn't sure it was that aspect which had grabbed my attention.
This morning when I awoke, it was still dark and I wanted to take advantage of this natural darkness rather than create a dark area. I set up my camera and placed a lit candle on the table.
Experimentation was really what it was all about as I really wasn't sure what I would be able to capture. I took photos from various perspectives and different exposure settings and began to get a feel for what I might like. Looking straight down on to the flame I was able to produce some lovely diffused images. The colours provided by the flame also gave a warmth to the white candle.
It was a really enjoyable exercise and I learnt a lot about light and dark contrasts and the differences between what the eye sees and the camera lens. It was also more involved than I at first imagined when seeking a minimalist image.
I chose a black and white image for today's photo; it represents for me, peace and tranquility more than the coloured images. It is this aspect which I felt more strongly to be associated with lit candles. It also contrasts significantly with what the rest of the day holds as I shall be in the city tonight photographing the Christmas lights amongst the throngs of shoppers and visitors.

Day 354 - 20th December, 2014
What a day; full of laughter and enjoyment as well as achievement. I finished off a job to complete my storage facilities for fire wood and implements, then had a call from next door to ask if I would be interested in some old scales used to weigh sardines on the beach over 80 years ago. Would I? I went like a shot and picked them up and will put them in a prominent place I've chosen tomorrow.
Refael then turned up to show me how to plant veg! I'd already done it however knew that it wouldn't be perfect. Sure enough, he titivated it up a bit and then said he'd give me 9/10! He spotted some potatoes I'd set aside to nurture for seed and set about preparing them for planting. This chore gave me the opportunity to capture an image of his hands as he worked. I've tried before when he wasn't doing anything and it didn't work. This time though, I knew more about what I was trying to achieve and had plenty of time to have a go.
When the potatoes had been sorted, accompanied by a continuous dialogue of instructions as to how they were to be planted, I was instructed not to do anything as he'd be up to plant them early next week! Ah, it's good to be a helpless woman at times!
On to the cortijo for a get together with Rafael and his family. A huge paella had been prepared and it was simply delicious. There's a bit of competition within the family as to who can prepare the best paella. I loved this one that's for sure, however I also know that much of my enjoyment came from the fact that I didn't prepare it myself! There is something about being amongst friends in an environment such at that of today which I so enjoy. Formality goes out of the window. There's so much noise and laughter; most of all though, there is a genuine warmth which wraps itself around everyone. A really good day and the photo I have chosen is one of Rafael's gnarled and arthritic hands preparing the seed potatoes. The hands "speak" and more so in black and white.

Day 355 - 21st December, 2014
I was up and out whilst it was still dark. The idea was to capture an image of the sun rising on the horizon. It only lasts for a short time before it happens behind the mountains again. As it is the shortest day of the year today I thought it was appropriate, however, thick cloud spoilt my best laid plan! Climbing up to the top of the mountain in the dark was interesting and had me thinking about a friend ski-ing in the fog and becoming completely disorientated! Nonetheless both Nell and I arrived at the top together and sat and watched as shapes began to emerge from the gloom.
There was a brief moment of colour from the sunrise which I captured and have chosen as my photo for today, otherwise it stayed colourless and overcast!
Today I officially became the only original house owner on the mountain. Neighbours who bought their house 6 months before we did left, after having owned their place for 26 years. Granted they only used it as a holiday home, however it does mark the end of an era somehow and it was very emotional for all as they said their goodbyes.

Day 356 - 22nd December, 2014
This winter's potatoes all planted and ready to grow! I shall enjoy watching the sprouts force their way through the soil in the forthcoming months as well as seeing the cabbages, cauliflowers, onions and strawberries forge ahead! Ever the optimist; hopefully the elements won't conspire against me and at least some of the produce will mature!
I met up with Brian and Arthur for a photo shoot; it's been a while since we had a get together. I had a pretty good idea what I wanted to try out as there was wind moving the clouds along nicely. I had in mind some long exposure images either using the sea or clouds to create an illusion of smooth movement. In the event I wasn't quite able to achieve that which I had anticipated, mainly due to a need to hone my skills more in this department! It's also difficult to get much feed back from the images captured via the camera when using this technique.
Nonetheless, I was able to see the beginnings of where I want to get to. I've chosen this image for today although I know I can improve a lot on this effort in the future. I have in mind another place I want to go to and try again when the elements are right.

Day 357 - 23rd December, 2014
I was up early in an effort to get going and finish off several jobs which were waiting. It was a bit nippy out first thing as there were clear starlit skies. Needs must though, so I ploughed on.
I was working at a place where I could see the sun, not long after sunrise and as it appeared from behind a bank of cloud obscuring the horizon. I managed to take a few photographs as it showed itself briefly before disappearing again behind some thinner cloud.
I'd noted that the clouds were coming from the NE and hoped to be able to try out some long exposure photography later. I know what I'm aiming for and was anticipating being able to incorporate the mountain of Maroma in the image. When I stopped for a break I took my camera and tripod up the road a bit and focussed in on Maroma. I waited for the puffier, small clouds to find their way into my shot so I could start my 30 second exposure. Obviously the wind currents are unpredictable at the top of the mountain, because the clouds moved along nicely everywhere, other than over Maroma! I took some long exposure photos using a tree as foreground interest, however it wasn't really what I was after.
So, the photo I have chosen for today is one I took first thing. It's a nice enough image and I would've been really pleased with it at the beginning of the year. I'm not displeased with it; it just wasn't what I really wanted to finish up with at the end of the day!

Day 358 - 24th December, 2014
Deciding to go to the top of the mountain even though I was pretty sure I wouldn't be able to see the sun rising on the horizon, I knew I'd made the right choice when I set foot on the summit. The clouds were whispy and hanging just above the distant mountain tops which were in silhouette. Dawn was just beginning and I could see there was likely to be a colourful display even without the actual sun visible.
I set my camera for long exposures. The clouds were hardly moving and I wanted to make the most of the colours as they changed. It was truly beautiful watching the scene unfold. As Nell and I walked back down the mountain, so the dew began to sparkle in the increasing vibrant light. Looking upwards, the clouds were creating dancing forms across the sky and providing beautiful backdrops to the scenery. A wonderful start to the day. Yep, it's Christmas Eve!

Day 359 - 25th December, 2014
Christmas Day! Not much time to think about photos for today. I did have time for a short play with long exposures on the clouds. The formations weren't conducive to spectacular images, however each time I try, I learn.
Whilst I had the camera set up and the clouds had formed a blanket, I was taking down the tripod and camera and caught sight of JJ, my cat, in a tree and stalking an imaginary prey. She stopped momentarily and I clicked the shutter. The result is my photo for today. Nothing spectacular, just one of those moments!
The weather was really mild for this time of the year and not at all Christmassy. The mountain was shrouded in fog as the sun went down. Another few days and it is all supposed to change. Then there may be a possibility of more seasonal images.

Day 360 - 26th December, 2014
A case of "now where were we" today as I picked up things I'd dropped for Christmas. What transpired though was a need to deal with problems that had manifested themselves as a result of the work I was undertaking before the festive season. Thus it was, I needed to clean out both filters on the washing machine once I had totally repaired a water leak on the pump. I'd had to take the pump apart from its fittings when a threaded piece snapped inside. When I put it back together I couldn't decide whether a slight dampness was caused by condensation or a leak. To be sure I stripped it all and put it back together with more plumber's tape. Success! The dirt displaced though, found its way to the washing machine and after cleaning the filter, I needed to access and clean the water inlet. Success! The next item for my attention was a brass joint in the watering system of the garden which had cracked one winter in the cold. Hot glue applied to the crack sorted out that problem. Success! Then it was on to my desktop computer which at one time looked as if it had a fatal flaw. I located the problem and dealt with it. Computer up and running again. Success!
Whilst waiting for the water systems to fill and pressurise, I was able to sit with my camera and contemplate various photographic opportunities. I saw the dew glistening on some weeds as the sun reached them and played around with bokeh effects for a while. I could also see a few clouds scudding across the sky and captured a few images, however I didn't have time to devote to long exposures which is what I really wanted to do.
In the end, I concentrated on numerous bees working the rosemary. It was a challenge to capture clean images as they flitted about fairly quickly. The photo I have chosen for today is one of a bee moving from one sprig to another. I particularly like this capture because the wings of the bee are moving in a way which creates a helicopter effect!

Day 361 - 27th December, 2014
I set off early this morning specifically to explore north facing areas. We've had some heavy dews of late and I wanted to see if it was due to frost; I found at least some of it was. There was nothing much by way of photographs to be had as the frost was wet rather than crisp, however it does mean that if temperatures drop as predicted, there are some areas higher up and further inland which may well be worth visiting for some icy sculpture images.
I made my way to where I knew the sun would be dancing on the wet drops. I wanted to play around with my macro lens as well as using extension tubes on my zoom lens.
It was really interesting to see the effects of the various bits and pieces as I added them individually. Macro is great for really close up work, however it didn't provide much opportunity to include an interesting background blur.
I knew that what i really wanted was to capture some bokeh effect and eventually decided on using my zoom lens together with all three extension tubes I had with me.
I was chuffed to bits with the effect I was able to achieve. I just loved the bokeh effect which was derived totally from dew drops lit by the sun. I used several different flowers as my foreground interest as I experimented with light and composition and for today's photo I have chosen one using a sprig of French Lavender.
On my way back home I realised just how wet I had become! My jeans and jumper were soaked at points where I'd been in contact with the ground!

Day 362 - 28th December, 2014
Last Sunday for the shooters to roam on the mountain until October next year! They were out in force despite strong winds.
I had a watering system to install for my fruit and veg plants so needed to be outside as well. Not only was the wind strong, it was cold too which made working with alkathene tubing a bit of a struggle. Eventually it was done however, and now all that's needed to keep everything growing is a turn of a tap and the water will flow to each plant.
Back indoors I decided to have a go at one of the photographic ideas I've come across over the year. I needed a sheet of glass and was able to combine an experiment with cleaning in the bathroom; a glass shelf I have there served my purpose!
The idea was to photograph from above, water droplets sprayed onto the glass with various colourful items below. It was fascinating to see how words from packaging appeared in the droplets as well as colours which blended beautifully and provided a backcloth. After playing around for a while to see different effects, I decided that the image which most appealed to me was one which contained little colour. I really liked the pattern and texture which I'd captured. A blue highlight around some of the drops was a detailed bonus. Understated and simple seems to be the way my photography is moving at the moment!

Day 363 - 29th December, 2014
I needed a break today and the hoolie blowing outside first thing, gave me the excuse I needed. Nell and I took off heading inland. There was a sprinkling of snow on the top of Maroma and the wind coming from the north, was cold. Suitably attired however, I was ready!
Deciding to take a look to see how much more water was running in the river, I was pleasantly surprised by not only the quantity and force of the flow, there was also hardly any wind. I spent a lovely time scouting around and photographing the various waterfalls and playing with filters to blur the water. The idyll was shattered at one time as two Dutch walkers decided to slam metal doors after using the loos. The noise resounded in the valley and of course upset Nell. I wasn't ready to decamp though and it wasn't long before the women walkers headed towards me. They wanted to ask for directions to a place I know well from my attempts to get to the top of Lucero. I was tempted for a split second to deny knowledge, however what goes around, comes around, so I stepped up and wished them a pleasant walk after pointing them in the right direction!
Seeing the amount of water flowing near the river source, I wanted to see how much was flowing further down river. I headed towards an area where water is funnelled through a gap before it drops below. I hoped that the volume of water flowing would create a big waterfall. It was worth the walk to get to it and I will return soon after the next heavy rains; it will definitely be spectacular.
My photo for today is one taken near the source of the river. I was thinking in terms of a black and white image, however found that it was too bland. The colours I have included add to the image without detracting from the waterfalls and flow which is where I wanted emphasis. The added bonus when I returned home was that the wind had dropped; a definite result for today on all counts then!

Day 364 - 30th December, 2014
Well that had to be the funniest photography session I've ever enjoyed! I was looking for a chess set I thought I had a few days ago with a view to working with lights and shadows. An image I saw a while ago really impressed me and I wanted to have a go at seeing what was involved to achieve such a capture.
I couldn't find the chess set, however I did come upon some miniature dominoes and jenga. I set up the dominoes on the table, however black on brown didn't do it for me. I lay a black sheet on top of the table and was setting the dominoes up when my cat decided to come and investigate. For a while she just sat and watched, then temptation became too much and a paw came out and she swiped at the line I was trying to create. Shooing her from the table I then noticed her head popping up in different places; she was trying out the various vantage points provided by the chairs!
Trying to keep one eye on her as well as set up the dominoes, I wasn't quick enough as she made her move; this time she tweaked the black sheet and the whole lot fell down in a sequence! It was quite fascinating to watch my very own domino effect! She looked to see my reaction and I just couldn't help but laugh. I think it might have worked, however miniature dominoes are not the answer!
Undeterred I set up Jenga blocks to have a go with. This time with no sheet and on much firmer ground with the table. I worked with different angles of light to create shadows and various formations of the blocks as well as depth of field.
Although the image for today is no masterpiece, I enjoyed the process and learnt a great deal about lighting, shadows and depth of field.

Day 365 - 31st December, 2014
My last photo on the last day of the year and this particular project is now complete. The photo I have chosen for today is so apt. Waking to no electricity in the house, I fished out the kettle to use on the gas hob for a cup of tea by torchlight. Having checked that the problem wasn't with a trip switch here, as I waited for the kettle to boil, the shadow created by the torch of this normally hidden away appliance caught my eye!
It's a reflection of the impact photography has had on my life that I find much delight in noticing such images nowadays. It also brings home to me quite readily, the fact that with a hobby such as photography, it doesn't matter the situation, there's always a photo to be had; it's impossible to be bored.
There was no natural or electric light this morning and yet out of that situation, a photo opportunity presented itself. It's why I feel today's photo for me, represents so much more than an image of a kettle and shadow.
Having negotiated the rottweilers at Endesa, the electric company, I was eventually allowed to report the power failure. A couple of hours later it was resolved, having turned out to be a fuse in the main transformer which had blown. I was then free to join Brian and Tipsy for a previouisly arranged get together and go off to the beach to practice some long exposure photography.
A really great end to 2014 and now 2015 beckons with all the surprises it may hold. Bring it on!!
