April 2015
April 1st
I was up in time to just catch the blood moon sinking behind a mountain. No time to grab my camera to capture an image. I was up however, and as I knew the Internation Space Station was about to make a pass, I decided to make the most of the balmy conditions before the insects come out to annoy later in the year.
The ISS pass was a long one which was just as well because I had my camera set up in slightly the wrong place. I was able to home in and there was time to take two photos before it disappeared on its way around the world again.
The lights on the coast were so clear; I had the idea to use the widescreen setting to see what I could produce for my aspect ratio assignment. I spent some time playing around with various exposures. I wanted to be able to include stars in the image without the lights from the coast being overwhelming. Before I knew it, dawn started to break. Playtime was over!
On my walk this morning I noticed that the Andalusian horse was out. Its eyes are huge and I love trying to capture reflections if he gives me a chance by standing still. He sort of obliged and I was able to take two photos before he started to get frisky and move about more.
Back home again I was full steam ahead on the hen run. This weekend should see all the improvements and extensions complete. Given that there are another three hens waiting to sample life outside a cage I am happy that they won't have to wait much longer.

April 2nd
There was time to grab my camera this morning as the moon began to set. I headed to the top of the garden and in my haste to get set up, didn't notice a water pipe in my way. I felt myself falling, however my only concern was to get up and get my photo! I fell into some trees so was quickly back on my feet and checking my camera settings!
The cloud was wispy again and as the moon started to set, they took on an orange hue. As it sank lower, so the outline of the mountians was silhouetted. I found it quite a challenge to get the exposure settings right. I waited until both the moon and village lights were in the same image. Trying to include the colourful display of clouds as well as ensure the lights and moon weren't blown out, was difficult, especially as the moon seemed to sink very quickly. It was good practice though and hopefully I will have learnt a lot and can improve the next time conditions are good.

April 3rd
Strange, this morning I could see the mist from last night, was rising through the valleys leaving the mountain tops exposed. I went out with my camera and thought I'd captured some good images. Settling down later on to see what I had, I found my sd card blank! I tested it and it seems OK, so not quite sure what went on.
Nonetheless, I had played around in the mist last night. I went out with my torch to see what images I could create using beams of light. I remembered a light on the side of a building and when I turned it on, it created a lovely loom of light.
I also played around with a chess set. I have an idea of the scene I want to create and feel it's beginning to come together.

The moon was lighting up the sky and clouds again early this morning. I am making the most of the opportunities afforded with the timing of the moon as it sets at the moment and was delighted to capture some lovely images using plants as framing. As the moon set, so cloud started to drift in from the sea. I thought I had missed my opportunity yesterday morning to capture mountain tops above thick cloud, however there was a repeat performance and I didn't miss out this time.
As I was heading back to the house, I caught sight of some iris flowers out in full bloom. I just felt they would provide me with a lovely black and white image and I wasn't disappointed.
As the sun rose, we all seemed to move outside to take advantage. JJ, my cat was sprawled on top of the picnic table. I fetched my camera in the hope of capturing an image for my latest assignment. She was squinting into the sun however and I didn't think I'd be able to capture anything of note. Just as I was about to pack up, so JJ's eyes opened wide as a bird flew into a nearby tree. I clicked the shutter and kept my fingers crossed that what I had seen in reality I had been able to capture. The clouds and sun had been reflected in her eyes as they had opened; I had indeed captured the moment.

April 5th
Fog last night was still about this morning, however the cloud lifted briefly to show the moon. I took a photo as its colour was red rather than the normal orange, however mist meant the exposure wasn't sharp. There had been a heavy dew and I had a wander around the garden looking for images including water droplets. I saw some on the petals of the irises and a funnel spider's web was covered with too much water to make anything of it.
Messing around indoors with the globe a simple remark led to a fun time of exploration. Taking off the lens of my camera, the objective was to see what my camera sensor would capture through the globe. After a bit of experimentation, an image appeared. Trying various objects an image emerged with colouring I really liked. It was the handle of a mug.
Moving outside to see what might emerge in natural light, it was clear that we'd gone as far as we could without a camera lens. JJ came out to investigate our experiments and the next session involved catching JJ in various poses and looks as Tipsy had a mad runabout.
After Brian and Tipsy headed home, I went out for a walk with Nell, stopping to overlook the village and see what images there might be with the mist drifting in and out. As I looked around, fireworks started to go off in the village for the Easter procession, so Nell and I left in a hurry to continue to the top of the mountain. On the way up the cloud thickened again although as it cleared now and again, the light encouraged me to go for black and white images.

The effect of the weather continues to dominate my photos; well, more specifically the clouds! Last night there was a really strange colouring out to sea as the sun went down. It looked unreal and so of course needed to be recorded.
This morning I awoke again to a foggy outlook, however it thinned at times. I saw a piece of newly cleared land suddenly appear to be under a spotlight and made haste to capture the moment before the cloud once again closed in.
Feeling very satisfied with progress on the more secure hen run; it all seems to be coming together now. I've created another route for the hens to get out into the run I will soon roof in and have negotiated with a builder friend for wood so I can construct steps for them to reach the exit.
My submissions for the aspect ratio assignment have now been submitted. I feel that I have learnt so much through the assignments I have been allocated and am really looking forward to see what my next challenge will be.

I was up and out early today as I wanted to get on with work. It was dull and grey, however I thought I'd use the opportunity to continue to learn about black and white images. I wanted to see if I am better able to see potential as well as continue to utilise aspect ratios in camera.
Just down the road from home I spotted a dead and falling stem of a cactus plant. Lining it up with the peak of Bentomiz opposite in the background it looked OK. A few steps further and I caught sight of the top Maroma, the tallest mountain, peeking through the cloud. I used nearby tree cover to provide contrast and texture.
I played around with depth of field and tones with wild flowers. It was only really the lavender which gave much of a contrast against the other wild flowers. When I processed this particular photo I noticed Nell sitting patiently a little further on!
When I look back over my earlier black and white attempts, I am able to see improvement. I'm not sure whether dull conditions help or hinder in this respect. I certainly had to concentrate on finding contrasting elements as there was no sun available to provide direct light and shade. A fun and useful exercise.

I decided last night to have a scout around and take photos of some machinery which are being used to move soil on the mountain. I wanted to see what angles I could get before they left. It was cloudy and good conditions for capturing such images.
Today conditions were pretty much the same. It was difficult to know how to dress for the weather this morning though. The forecast was for strong winds and high seas with the possibility of rain. In the event, there was little of any of those elements present, however it didn't mean there weren't opportunities for photos! As I left the mountain, there was a glorious sunrise behind the mountain range and there was time to stop and take a photograph.
Heading to the coast to meet up with Brian and Tipsy, I could see that there was a stillness on the coast although out to sea there were plenty of white horses. It was a bit disappointing, however the light and cloud formations made for some interesting images, particularly in black and white. I came across some clams washed ashore with the rough seas and opened them up to see what they looked like inside. They smelt, however contrasting colours once open helped to offset that drawback!
Rescue services were out scouting the coast. Both helicopter and lifeboat were patrolling the coastline. This particular area doesn't appeal to me much; they are definitely not dog friendly and I've been refused a drink even sitting outside a restaurant because I had Nell with me. Today though, I made the most of conditions and although I came away thirsty, the images I had captured more than made up for lack of hospitality!

I'm getting in a fair bit of practice with black and white images of late with the overcast and dull conditions. This morning there was some rain about however nothing of note. I saw the clouds part and the mountain opposite become visible briefly. I took a photo because the cloud formations was different from earlier in the week.

April 10th
A busy day trying to get back to where I was before the builders moved in on the road and half a tree was lopped. The work started surrounded by cloud and I didn't realise how wet I had become until I felt water running down my neck! It was a good job to do on a day like today though as I couldn't get on with the hen run or painting; I felt I'd achieved!
Confirmation today that the assault on Lucero will take place on Sunday so tomorrow will be a light day as far as work is concerned.
I didn't take any photos today, instead I did a bit of work on a flower head that I had photographed yesterday. I loved the way the petals folded round and their texture. I've been experimenting with spot focussing on macro images because I'm beginning to create a feel which is really growing on me; it's a dreamy look which I like for some subjects.

Another misty start to the day, however the mist wasn't wet like yesterday so Nell and I set off for a walk to have a look to see what emerged. I headed for an area which overlooked the village as I wanted to try and capture an image of the fog hanging over the village. En route I took a couple of photos looking down towards the coast.
Once at the top of the mountain the mist swirled around me and I sat for a while looking to see what compositions I could make. I was interested in producing black and white images and as I edited my photos later, I knew I was thinking along the right lines; colour just didn't do it in the conditions.
I'd made a note of a row of trees which I hoped to be able to photograph in misty conditions, however when I searched them out, I could see conditions were clear where they were. It's difficult to find individual trees which have a good shape and would therefore lend themselves to a stand alone image in the mist. I found a couple of tall, reasonably shaped trees alongside other features though and made what I could of those.

A landmark day! I made it to the top of Lucero the mountain which denied me last year. It was worth the wait though and such a memorable adventure.
It was worthy of a separate entry as far as I was concerned so the photos from today can be found under its own heading of Lucero in the main page.
Just one to be going on with though!

No problems with muscles or joints for either Nell or me this morning. I saw my neighbour out for a walk too so presumably she was no worse the wear for our adventure. I wanted to get to the top of the mountain and just look at Lucero. The number of times I've looked over the past year and wondered whether I'd ever reach the peak could now be forgotten. The sun was casting a lovely yellowy haze in the valleys and sky and the silhouette of Lucero was perfect.
I played around with some close up images of a dandelion flower I found. In this place last year there had been numerous huge ones, today there was one small one. Still I made the most of it. I also had a go at creating a blurring of the lovely coloured grass with a recognisable daisy flower in the centre.
Then it was back to working on the hen run with the sun on my back and a huge grin of satisfaction across my face still, from yesterday's trek.

April 14th & 15th
It was a trip out to have a look at Lake Vinuela yesterday. The place has been out of bounds for several months due to the processional caterpillars which pose a risk to humans and dogs in particular. Now it's possible to get back and enjoy what the area has to offer.
First of all though, I had to go to the bank and as I was near to the port, I decided to have a wander around and see what there might be to photograph.
At Vinuela later there were plenty of small, spring flowers together with grass growing alongside the lake. It was a challenge to find some different way of presenting a scene which is familiar. I had an incentive in that the next assignment I have to tackle is to present three images in HDR and I hoped I might be inspired. The day was overcast with little contrast between shade and light areas. The HDR technique enabled the tones and colour available to be captured and I have a few images which I may well present for my assignment.
I'd met with Brian and Tipsy and we had arranged to have a meal out after the photo shoot. I think my mind was more on food than photography and we decided to leave after a short while to feed our faces. I'm hoping really that an imminent, overnight trip to Huelva, the town from which Christopher Columbus set sail when he discovered America, will provide me with more opportunities to capture some more images in HDR and images which I want to capture anyway and not simply for my assignment.

April 16th
I was awake early and raring to go. It was just beginning to get light as Nell and I made our way to the top of the mountain; I had the idea of capturing a sunrise as there was plenty of cloud around. It was the wrong sort of cloud looking towards where the sun would rise though; too heavy to let much colour through. I decided to use my Lee Big Stopper and draw out what colour there might be. Then I thought about using my globe as the sun wasn't yet up and so shouldn't cause me problems.
Everywhere was so wet and my globe even more so when it went for a roll down the hill! I retrieved it and set it up to capture the colour in the sky, such as it was.
On the way back down the mountain, I could see the weather beginning to close in; a disappointment as I wanted to get on with the hen run. Once I'd had breakfast however, things were brightening up and I mixed a load of cement ready for the big push.
I was caught in a heavy shower later on although as I was working below a large tree I didn't get as wet as I might have done otherwise. Undaunted I carried on and was chuffed to have reached the stage where a few hours tomorrow and I can start to show the hens how to negotiate the steps up to their new (hopefully safe) outside run.
A blast from the past whilst I was working! A car pulled up and out stepped a couple who used to live on the mountain about 15 years ago. I remembered their names thank goodness and we had a quick catch up. They'd been to see the house they used to own and stayed in for holidays and weren't impressed. It now belongs to a Scotsman and the changes he has made wouldn't fall into the category of improvements, at least that's what I think and obviously so did they!

I feel a bit battered and bruised today! Fighting with netting is not something I'd recommend and for sure, it's a battle to come out on top! I had anticipated having the hen house roof in place today and being able to sort out the steps for them to use the secured run before too long. It's going to have to be a little while longer before the celebrations can begin.
I started the day with a wander. The day was off to a glorious start. I finished up on top of the mountain and was laying flat out trying to get some low down shots when I heard voices. It was the neighbour with whom I'd climbed Lucero arriving with a couple of friends who were staying. That was the end of my messing around, however I had managed to capture a few images which I thought might be OK. I'm trying to use HDR at the moment as it is the subject of my latest assignment

I broke out the beer by way of celebration. It's done! The hen run is ready to receive visitors of the feathered kind! I have the scars to show for my endeavours too as the netting took on a life of its own. I can look forward to eggs produced by happy hens scratting in an area which will keep them occupied and busy. Mind you, I still have to encourage them up the newly constructed ramp!
I was out at the house of friends on the mountain last night and it turned into something different from that originally anticipated because the lights went out! Generally speaking I'd say that to live in this mountain environment one needs to be resourceful and my friends are no exception. The meal was being prepared using electricity, however it was easy to change over to gas and finish cooking. Light was provided by candles and there was a log fire for when the cold seeped in as it tends to as night falls.
We were all ready for a spectaculr sunset. It looked promising at first as clouds started to drift into the valleys, however by the time the sun disappeared, the colours had largely disappated and the clouds receded. I was able to capture some images of lights both in the village and beyond. It really was a beautiful night especially during the blue hour.
I returned home very happy to have caught up with my friends as well as having been able to mess around with night images. Best of all though, I also had left overs to bring home with me; should keep me going nicely for a few days!

April 19th
The sort of day I needed, languid and totally enjoyable! I did manage to pull of few weeds in the morning in order to get to strawberries waiting to be picked. A read of the Sunday paper and then I headed to the coast to meet with Brian and Tipsy to take the dogs for a walk in the forest. It's great to be able to once again walk in areas of pine trees now the processional caterpillar threat has gone for this year.
It was Sunday and of course plenty of people were about, however heading towards the highest point we had the place more or less to ourselves.
Not having had any idea of subjects to photograph, as we were in a forest I had a go with using the zoom to create a different sort of image. It was really interesting trying to focus in on an element which wouldn't distort too much with the zooming. I thought at first it was better to focus on something in the distance although I think I've found in this situation, that focussing in on something nearer worked better.
A fun afternoon for all of us and just what was needed!

A few days away, Fantastic photo opportunities and very different from those anticipated before leaving. I shall be spending many happy hours sorting the hundreds of images I have over the next few days. Today though, I am only going to upload one which leapt out at me.

April 24th
Didn't know really where to start with sorting out my photos. I tried to be logical, however at the start I kept being drawn back to the Rio Tinto images. I decided to keep going until I'd had my fill of editing them and then start at the beginning of the trip later on.
Leaving in time to call in to collect my post on Wednesday morning, I was a little concerned when I saw I had registered mail to sign for. As I hadn't ordered anything, it didn't bode well! As it turned out I was in for a surprise. I had ordered a holder for my Lee Filters months ago and it had finished up in Brasil. I'd been offered a voucher by Amazon which I accepted and then ordered the holder from another company. The registered parcel was my holder which had eventually found its way back from Brasil! As I didn't need two I was able to find a good home for it with Brian!
Making our way towards Huelva where I was hoping to be able to capture images of the port area and also capture some night-time images, we saw in the distance something which looked like spectacular bridge columns with stays caught by the sun. As we came nearer, so Brian declared that it was a solar farm with panels directed towards the coloumns to heat up water and what we could see were the rays plus water vapour coming out from the top.
Trying to get closer, we saw the possibility of making our way to the top of a hill. As we walked away from the car, so another vehicle drove by and the occupant headed in the same direction as us. As there didn't seem to be any access to the other side of the hill apart from invading a field of growing wheat, I asked the guy if there would be a problem if we went into the field. He came up with a better suggestion and told us we could go into the property he was just visiting with his permission and get much closer to the farm.
The weather was just about perfect for capturing images and we later learnt that we were at the site of the very first such development in Europe.
Travelling onwards towards our destination for the night, we were treated to some fantastic images of storks nesting, mainly on high voltage pylons. Unable to stop on the motorway we made a note of the location with a view to returning and carried on.
After finding the hotel and sorting out ourselves we decided to get out and discover the area more. The Donana Nature Reserve was nearby and we were hopeful of seeing more wildlife. We arrived at El Rocio having seen on the map that there was a lagoon in the locality. There was plenty of opportunity for practising capturing birds in flight and there were also horses on higher ground in the centre of the lagoon.
Making our way back towards the post of Huelva we passed huge indistrial sites. Two huge petrochemical companies had bases there and the smell was potent. It also meant that although there were photos to be had as the sun went down, there was nowhere we were able to stop. Having felt a huge sense of satisfaction at our discoveries thus far, we decided to forego sunset and night time photos and go back to the hotel to get ready for the next day's adventures.

April 25th
I was really pleased to see huge dandelion flowers out on the top of the mountain this morning; I thought I'd missed them. I sat and played around for ages with different lenses and thoroughly enjoyed my start to the day. Normally Nell sits nearby happily contemplating whatever dogs contemplate, however this morning, even she was getting fidgety after the amount of time I'd spent messing around!
Back home I set about finishing off emptying and cleaning out the cuddle puddle ready to paint and then fill. I also let out the hens from their secure area into the rest of the fenced off area as the weeds have been growing in abundance. They were seemingly very happy to loose themselves amongst the weeds and there was plenty of clucking going on. I made sure they were back in the secure area before I came indoors; that fox is just too wiley and I absolutely expect it to be nearby waiting its chance.
I've decided to upload the rest of my photos from the trip to Huelva today and process those I took this morning sometime tomorrow. Rain is forecast so I may be indoors rather than outdoors with more time to edit.
The second day of our Huelva trip started off well. I was awake before sunrise and went outside the hotel with Nell. It was glorious as it rose, full of colour and its rays touching industrial plants in the distance. I saw a stork fly past me and into the distance. There had been a heavy dew and some of the yucca plants had lovely water droplets on them. I messed around seeing if I could capture the rising sun reflected in them, however without my tripod it was difficult. Out of the corner of my I eye I spotted the stork returning and managed to capture a series of photos as it flew past. I wasn't able to capture one as it flew across the sun, however it was reasonably close.
I went inside the hotel to have a look around and took photos. As I was returning to my room, a tall glass caught my eye as the sun coming throught a window caught it and cast a shadow onto a table. The composition with a book and some delicate material on the table as well was just right. The receptionist studiously ignored me was I wandered around the get the best angle for the shot!
Later on Brian and I set off on our next adventure of discovery! Stopping to take some photos of storks flying around nearby I suddenly spotted one standing really close to us on a pylon. I was able to get in really close before it flew off and then of course, there was an opportunity to capture it in flight. It was an amazing sight as there was a row of about 10 or so pylons and each had a nest on top.
Heading towards a lagoon we thought might give us the opportunity to photograph the colours we were after ,we found ourselves off road and in the way of an official looking guy. He passed us and stopped. I went towards him and as he seemed friendly, asked if he could tell us where we could get to the Rio Tinto away from the tourist areas. He readily gave detailed instructions and was very helpful.
We found the area shortly afterwards and couldn't believe the beauty which was before us. We had the place to ourselves and I spent a very happy time capturing the colours of minerals in and around the water together with a waterfall, with my Lee filters. I really think that if these were the only images I'd managed to capture, I would've considered the trip a success. As it was I had hundreds to remind me of the wealth of discoveries during this relatively short trip.
We had intended to travel home via the coast, however after such a successful trip, decided to leave that location for another day. Just as well really because we became stuck in Seville; we were caught in the last few days of the annual Seville fair. It was colourful with plenty of hussle and bustle and national costumes on display, although the frustration of not being able to get on our way, rather overshadowed the event for us!

April 26th
The predicted showery weather arrived, however it also brought with it some photo opportunities! I saw clouds scudding across the sky and went outside to take some long exposure images. Not only was I able to capture some lovely images of the blurred clouds, I was also treated to the sight of a rainbow. It stretched high into the sky from the mountain opposite and at one time also completed a full arc into the sea. It was so huge my lens wasn't wide enough to catch it all, however I saw it in all its glory for a short while.
Deciding to head out for a walk I wanted to wear my black and white hat as the light looked as if it might be right. On the way to the top of the mountain I caught sight of a vulture circling above me. I hope it'll stay around here this summer and not just be en route elsewhere.
The dandelion heads were still intact although a strongish wind was beginning to blow off the small parachute type flowers on some of them. I sat down to play again! This time, I hadn't realised the weather was closing in on the other side of the mountain until I was aware of it becoming darker. A quick dash back home and Nell and I didn't get too wet!

The big push is on for the summer! I couldn't paint the inside of the pool today as it was still wet, however it was all systems go on the outside. There's quite a bit of work to do as it has been somewhat neglected for the past couple of years, however it's surprising how simply filling in holes and getting rid of flakey paint makes a difference already.
The clouds were again scudding across the sky this morning and the light was great for long exposure images. I set up my camera and took some photos using the Big Stopper, however I wanted an even greater blur effect than I achieved with that filter, so added another one as well. I was pleased with the resulting images and couldn't make up my mind whether I preferred the B&W or colour; I love them both.
My pet spider (must think of a name) doesn't seem to move much even when I get right up close to capture an image. I know he/she can move though so I hope it hangs around; any visiting mosquitos (of which there are plenty) should provide a sufficient food supply and me with an in-house model!

An early start to get in a walk, take in the start of the day and get back home to paint the inside of the pool before the sun became too strong. The morning light was magical and lit up both the mountainside as well as individual trees and plants. I couldn't resist a short play with the few dandelion heads which were left. They'll all be gone soon.

Last night there was a spectacular sunset. I used my filters and captured all the colour that I was able. The insects are beginning to make conditions uncomfortable outside after the sun has gone down. They continually buzzed in front of my face.
This morning I cut my first cauliflower - it's absolutely perfect and looks delicious. I shall be eating it raw as well as cooked that's for sure. I was also able to collect eggs and strawberries as well and as I made my way back to the house I was feeling very satisfied with my haul!
I went walking with friends in the mountains and not climbing today! It was a venture into an area hitherto not explored by me. Driving quite far into and up the mountains the views were amazing. Leaving my car we set off walking down the mountain and eventually arrived at one of the white-washed villages where we stopped and ate a meal. We had been above this winter's snow line and I made a note for the future. It was a good time to go as there were spring flowers about and everywhere was still green and vibrant.

Woah, slow down time! Another month at an end, mind you there are so many exciting happenings coming up that I sort of want the future to arrive as well!
This morning I was up at daybreak to sort out weeds before there was any sign of a breeze. A couple of an hours work turned into double that however, as silly little things cropped up and needed to be sorted. Trouble was, I was way down the hill working and inevitably had to return home for things I needed ....several times! Eventually I finished and checked the water deposito. I realised that no water was coming in so went to check the meter and found I had been cut off. A phone call later established there was no fault on my part and order was eventually restored! Could've been a little awkward given that today I filled the pool!
I fetched 3 more hens to join those I already have. I never tire of watching as basic instincts click into place the moment they find themselves on solid ground rather than in cages. I used to keep new arrivals separate for a few days, however as long as this cockerel is OK with them, it seems as if integration is immediate. I shall watch to see how long it takes the new arrivals to negotiate the ramp into the extended, secure run. One of the older hens I have still hasn't made it up. Maybe she prefers having the rest of the area to herself when the others have gone!
The early morning light is simply glorious and I captured a panorama of it as it started to touch Maroma and the ridges above Sayalonga.
